Some Blessings (March 7)

Dear Everyone,

I just wanted to say that I know God hears and answers our prayers, whether we recognize the answers or not! We were blessed this week by seeing answers to many of our prayers, and it made me realize that all of the other times that I ask God for help and feel like He didn't necessarily answer it how I wanted it, it's because it's true - He doesn't always answer how I want, but He always answers!

We almost lost Bruno and Liliana because of the Law of Tithing - it was really hard for them to hear and they started to let their natural man take over their testimonies and diligence they had already shown. But after a lesson about faith, taught with our Mission President, they are ready to continue, maybe without knowing how everything will turn out, but that's what faith is all about! And that's how prayers should work too - we should act, without knowing the outcome, having faith that God will do His part. I'm so grateful to be a missionary!

Also, this week was transfers - I'm staying! Again! Transfer #6 in the office! We have a new Elder here in the office who is still not an executive, so we'll see where I end up at the end of this transfer, haha! We are now working as a four-way-companionship, so that, when there is little work for some of us in the office, we can leave and get more work in. I'm pretty excited about it!

The gospel is so true! I know it!

Elder V and Dad - February 28 "Greetings from Vermont"

Hey Dad!

What are you doing in Vermont? Did you tell me that already? Haha sometimes since I only get to really think about stuff on p-day, I forget what you've already told me. Sorry!

As I already said, I think it's so awesome that Ethan got to participate more than he was originally doing. I know he was a little bummed and he sounded so excited!

I read your conversation with Elder Tate. I love the leaders of the church! The greatest leaders are truly the most humble and loving, and that's how it seemed with Elder Tate.Haha sometimes I have to call the Missionary Department in Salt Lake for different mission things, and I LOVE talking to the receptionists, because they are so friendly! It's so funny how different a person can be when they are focusing their lives on Christ. It is a true blessing and it makes me want to be that type of person always!

Also, if he already sent you the talk he wrote about (the one he gave to his missionaries), you should send it to me!

About faith, and acting: it is so evident how this principle works with investigators and missionary work in general. It makes so much more sense for God to show His hand AFTER a trial or a step of faith, because if He did it before, we wouldn't learn anything, and learning is one of the reasons we are here on Earth! So if God just took care of all of our decisions and problems, we would never gain the experience that we need to be perfected. I love it when the gospel makes sense like that!

About the quote: I see that so much, even for myself with people that I talk to. I will bear my testimony, but it will have no effect on someone who just won't listen! The Spirit can teach pure truth through me, but people just don't accept it. It's like when Christ would go to Nazareth and the people threw him out and tried to kill Him; I mean, no one can have more effect on people than Christ, but even when He would teach pure doctrine, people turned it away. Like He explains, that's why He taught in parables, so that people wouldn't be held accountable for the things they would not understand. I want to work to have the Spirit testify to me of the truths we learn from modern day Prophets and Apostles, and to be enlightened throughout my life! Haha I always have these big goals but they are really things that I think about.

Okay well! I'm still here haha! It's been a while. The mission's funny that way. 9 months isn't a long time normally but on the mission it's like eternity in one area, but looking back it's flown by! Like, tomorrow is March! That's crazy! Anyway, I love you dad! Peace out!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Bruno, Liliana, Gabriel, and Lia (Feb 28 2017)

This is our family! Bruno is a butcher and Liliana cleans houses. Gabriel is 9 and Lia turned three last week, although she doesn't look like it in the selfie we took. She is seriously the cutest three-year-old that I've ever seen in my life. They are so awesome!

Wedding Update (NOT Spencer's Wedding!!)

February 21st Email to Everyone:

Dear Everyone,

This will be a quick one. We taught Bruno and Liliana about the Law of Chastity and they accepted to live it! (backstory - they aren't married, which is pretty normal here in Portugal, so we've gotta get them married) But anyway, they accepted and are choosing a wedding date this week! I love seeing how God prepares His children; they were already thinking about marriage and were happy to accept. I know that God prepares all of us for what we will face - He doesn't put allow us to pass through a challenge without preparing us beforehand, and He puts us in the right places at the right times to make big things happen! He just asks that we search to do His will, and not ours, and when we do, we will be coming closer to Heavenly Father.

On a side note, we went to the beach today, because the weather was so nice! #Portugal!

Have a successful week seeking for God's will in your life!

"A Bit of a Break" February 21st - Elder V and Daddy V

Hey Dad,

It's good to hear that you guys had a break! It seems like it's been a while for the family. Mom said that that movie "hidden figures" was really good. Haha but it's good to hear that the first two movies I see will be Star Wars! After going to the temple. Not like I don´t have PLENTY of time before I should be thinking about that, but oh do I miss it!

Also, you probably already knew but IKEA is a big thing here in Europe, so basically all of the furniture and appliances in missionary apartments are from IKEA, but they say it like "ee - kay- ah."

That's an awesome quote, too! Haha I'm sure that all returned missionaries set a ton of goals for after the mission and then get home and they just can't realistically do them all, and I probably won't be the exception, but one of the things I really want to do more is family history work! Here in Portugal, doing family history work is SO different, because they don't have as many records scanned and indexed and stuff, so they have to do a lot of the actual searching for records, whereas I have (for the most part) almost everything I need at my fingertips, so there's really no excuse for not doing it! And I believe that those blessings will come. So yup that's my goal.

Thanks for looking into the school stuff for me. I'll talk to Elder Yoder about going down to Logan and looking at the housing options.

What do you talk about when you go to those leadership training meetings? I imagine it's kind of the principle of giving more to him who has much, but that doesn't mean you just talk about "deep doctrine" kind of stuff haha, so what do you do? That's awesome that you'll be able to see Elder Cook again.

Time - it continues to scare me. Haha it's really funny to think that I've been here in the office for more than a fourth of my mission. Like at the end of next transfer, I'll have been here for almost half of my time in Portugal. That's weird! Being here makes the time go even faster - I feel like the weeks are just Friday-saturday-sunday-monday and then friday again.

Thank you for that scripture! The mission is awesome because it hits the extremes of your emotions - I've had extremely happy days, extremely frustrating days, extremely tiring days, etc. and it's almost like God stretches you in all directions to make you more pliable, which makes it easier for Him to shape you into what He wants! And this scripture made me realize that I can get in my own way of being molded - almost like if you're not careful, you could shape yourself into a "sad missionary" because of that "pliability;" but the Atonement puts me in a position to seek God's will for me, and even though it's probably not going to be what I always (or even mostly) what I want, it will be what God let it be. And that is a huge blessing!

Thanks dad! I love you! Have a fantastic week! Tell me how the meetings go!

Elder Valentine,

Greetings! Well, this is a bit different. The past couple of weeks were so crazy busy. But this past few days have been just the opposite. I took Friday off of work, and today (Monday) is Presidents Day, so I’ve enjoyed a four day weekend. I had a good mix of getting some things done around the house, working on a book project (yes, I’m still trying to get back to writing!), going on a date with Mom (best part of the weekend), and doing some fun shopping at IKEA. It’s been a nice break!

Yesterday I spoke in sacrament meeting. I had Anna sing with me a primary song on Jesus and reverence; it’s one you don’t hear anymore called, “To Think About Jesus.” The song went well, and I think the talk was also well received. As part of my talk I focused on the blessings and protections of both missionary work and temple and family history work. By the way, again and again at RootsTech the brethren (Elder Cook, Elder Renlund, Elder Ballard, President Nelson) emphasized that temple/family history work and missionary work are THE SAME WORK! I think I’ve shared this with you before but just in case, here’s my all time favorite quote about the protecting power of family history work. This is from Elder Renlund from last year’s RootsTech:

“You’ll find not only protection from the temptation and ills of this world, but you’ll also find personal power: power to change, power to repent, power to learn, power to be sanctified, and power to turn the hearts of your family together and heal that which needs healing.”

I love that promise!

I finally have all of the USU passwords and usernames and so on worked out. I am now just waiting to receive an email from them about your online orientation. As soon as I complete that for you (fun for me!) then we can register you for classes in April. You’ll see I also emailed Elder Yoder about housing. Maybe he could drive to USU and check out the housing options so you two and make a final decision. I’ll need to make a deposit for you on the apartment, so the sooner you decide the better.

Guess what? I get to go to a leadership meeting with all the bishops and stake presidents in the area this coming Saturday. It’s from 8:30-1 and it is being held in our stake center. Elder Cook is presiding and speaking. I am leading the singing!! The good news about that is that I get to sit up on the stand, thus I am really close to the action! Elder Cook should remember me since I traveled with him in England and Israel!! I can’t wait. I’ll tell you what I can from it.

Yesterday Mom made a Lord of the Rings cake for a new family in our ward. The family is a friend of mine from work, Laura Cleveland. Her husband has cancer and may not have long to live. Yesterday we did a fast for him, and many in the ward and at church joined in the fasting and prayers for them. It was his birthday (his name is Nathan), and so Mom spent most of the day on Saturday making this amazing cake! She has some cool pictures and I’ll have her send them to you.

Saturday night me and Mom saw a movie that you’ll have to watch when you get home. It’s called “Hidden Figures” and is about three African American women who were instrumental in our early NASA space flight program. It’s an amazing and inspirational movie. I’ll add it to your movie list!! But first things first. You have to watch Star Wars Force Awakens and Rogue One before any other movies!!!!

I hope that all is well with you. I can’t believe how fast time is flying. We continue to feel tons of blessings for having you out there serving the Lord. Stay positive and work hard and remember how much we love you! I gain great hope and peace from the following scripture in Moroni. I hope you are also gaining this same hope in Christ. Love you, Spencer!

Moroni 7:41:  “And what is it that ye shall hope for? Behold I say unto you that ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal, and this because of your faith in him according to the promise.”

Valentine Day - Spencer and His Momma

Here's a nice exchange between Elder Valentine and his one and only Mommy!

Hey momma VALENTINE!

Happy Valentine's day! Are you going to do anything fun for Valentine's day? Here it's called Dia dos Namorados (basically Couples Day, like BF and GF) and it's the same day with basically the same idea, they just don't call it Dia de St. Valentine which is silly to me but whatever haha :) I got two heart sugar cookies from one of the Senior Couple´s in the mission, and Elder Judd and I went and ate KFC (which is a thing here) for lunch and watched all the couples who were there haha it was pretty fun! I promise that I'll go get the scriptures soon - we just have to plan it well because it's like an hour away from here to get to the guy's shop and we don't know exactly where it is. But we'll go do it soon!

Yay for breaks! Mom, I'll totally spend July 5th cleaning the house with you if you want. It's been a while since I've cleaned up around there and it'll be just about my turn by then haha :) Thanks for using your time to figure out my card thing - it stinks sometimes when I'm like totally powerless to do anything for myself that is important but I have a really awesome mom so it helps!

I miss fun things like the Valentine Social! Not that I am ready to go home or anything but it's not like I can't miss doing fun stuff haha!

So, what are you studying gospel-wise right now? What are some gospel principles you have been actively trying to apply in your life? What was dad´s and yours first date? What was your favorite part about RootsTech? What did you learn?

Some random facts about the office - well, some days are calm but sometimes I get an email from Don Love (the church travel agent we work with) who will tell me he needs a sponsorship letter (it lets missionaries get visas in the states) tomorrow, so I have to run to the notary place by subway and get the thing notarized and sent through DHL the same day, and on the way back there is a pastry shop that has a big sign that says "Best croissants of Porto!" The croissants are pretty good. :) Residency stuff is SO frustrating. The last two mondays (p-day!) I've had to take missionaries to the residency place to get new residency cards because they lost theirs, and BOTH of them didn't work out, so it was a big waste of time and money to get the missionaries here and try and get the new cards. I sign lots of documents and mail that comes in and help president with transfers (which are the worst) and stuff. :) We are still in that apartment, it's still old, it's still cold, it still leaks (though in different places now)... yup. :) I haven't been eating anything healthy lately, unfortunately - ever since the new changes in the missionary schedule, President only gave us 30 minutes in the morning to get ready and eat, so I haven't had time to prepare food or a good breakfast, and it doesn't really work to cook food in the office... so I haven't been using recipes like I want to but eventually I'll make a good lunch. :)

Gotta run real quick, But I love you mom! :)

Hi there, Elder VALENTINE! Do they do Valentine's Day in Portugal? I don't remember if we talked about that last year or not. But Happy Valentine's Day! I wish I could have gotten a package off to you in time to send you some Valentine treats, but it's not just an excuse - I really was the busiest I think I have ever been. All my time completely taken up to the point that I didn't even have time to sleep. Literally!

I am so ready for a break - a real one, not just a vacation. You know, vacations are not necessarily a break - they are a break from regular life, but you still don't get free time to get stuff done, because you're gone from home, and that just means that all your regular life stuff that you don't have time for are still there when you get back. So what I really need is FREE TIME, not a vacation! AHHHH!

Actually I get a small break on Tuesday - I have the day off from work. So for the first time in about three months I have a day that I don't have to go to work, I don't have to sew a costume, I don't have to make a cake, and I don't have to go anywhere. I can stay home and start catching up on housework! (YAYYYYyyyyyy...........fizzle out....) Unfortunately one day is not enough though. :/

So, last week we were working on trying to get you logged in to your Chase account. I wasn't able to do that, but I can get in obviously, and you have $86 dollars in there right now so you can go get the scriptures. And your card will expire in April, and I was on the phone forever with them trying to figure out how to deal with that, but in the end I'm just going to have to mail it to you. If it's not activated yet it should be safe to mail it to you, so hopefully they will arrive here soon and then I'll forward them on to you and you can activate it from where you are. So I'm trying to take care of ya! Anyway, bottom line is, go get those scriptures! I will be so happy when you report that you have paid for them. :)

Well, Last week and this week were filled with making my cake! It took two days just to bake the cakes and mix the frostings and fondant, and then it took five days to do all the decorating on the tree and the rest of the cake. Three nights in a row I only got three hours of sleep. So in three nights I only got ONE night's worth of sleep. I am so tired! Anna has had a busy week too, and Ethan got really sick so he's needing more sleep than usual, and so the three of us went to Sacrament Meeting today and could NOT stay awake! It was so pitiful and embarrassing. So we went home after Sacrament Meeting and took a long nap. I have never done that in my life, but I felt that it was the best thing for our family just this once. If any family needed a true day of REST today, it was ours. I feel much better. But it will probably still be a while before I get "caught up" on sleep. In fact, if I don't get to bed soon here, I will be only getting less than six hours of sleep tonight too! So I'll tell ya a couple more things and then I need to get to sleep!

So aside from my cake contest, I had a great time participating in RootsTech for the first time. I have been to one day here and there in the past, but this time I pretty much went to the whole thing. Dad and I both loved being there together. He loved being able to see me all day for three days while he was working, and I loved being there to see him in his work environment and sharing all those cool experiences with him. One of the highlights for me was going to a VIP event at the Conference Center where they served hors d'erves (I think maybe that's almost the right spelling) and there were several general authorities there include some of the Twelve and many Seventies. I shook hands with three different Seventies that Dad knows, and I was only a few feet away from Elder Chistoffersen and Elder Oaks, and Elder Renlund. I also saw Donny Osmond a few feet away from me. It was really fun. Then after that we went into a meeting with them, and then into the Tab Choir Concert. It was such a great evening!

In the midst of all the cake and RootsTech craziness, we also had our ward Valentine Social. Dad and the bishopric did the Napoleon Dynamite dance and Dad was so awesome!!!! He actually nailed the dance. It was impressive. We were a bit late to the party because of delivering my cake just before, and so we were only there long enough to do the performance and have a few treats, and then it was over! Last year it was so amazing, so it was kind of a bummer for us to not get a chance to be super into it this year. But next year! And you'll be there!!! Hopefully you'll be able to take a break from college and come up for it. It will be so fun!!

Ok, so that's about all I have time for right now. Maybe I can write some more in the morning when I get to work! Ask me some questions. :)

I want to hear about your families you are teaching. Tell me some random facts about your day to day work in the mission office. How are things going with your apartment lately? Are you still in the same one? But no more fleas, and no more floods...? What have you been eating lately? Have you made syrup for your pancakes yet? Have you used any of the recipes I sent at Christmas?

I love you tons! Talk to you soon!

Love, Mom

RootsTech and Flu - Spencer and Dad

Here's an exchange between Elder Valentine and Dad Valentine on February 14:

Hey dad!

What a blessing! It's been a really good experience on the mission to see the hand of the Lord in every part of my life and the lives of others - I think that before the mission, I didn't realize how important Faith is in every moment. I've learned that faith is not something passive - it is us doing everything we can and trusting in God to deliver, and then no matter what the result is at the end, realized that God allowed it to be how it is for a reason. Like, Ethan told me that he got sick and couldn't perform in his solo and ensemble performances, which is a really big bummer; but honestly, all I could think was "what did God expect Ethan to get out of the turnout?" And I hope Ethan can have a positive outlook on it, though I know it's hard since I felt the same way about things in Junior High. Basically, it has been a really big blessing to be able to have "eyes of faith" recently and I'm so grateful to my Heavenly Father for every day that passes because I can see His hand in everything that I do, and that you guys do back home. So anyway, I agree that it's an amazing blessing that you only got sick at the end, and I'm grateful that my dad has a testimony strong enough to be able to say that!

Get better dad! I'm feeling great and Bruno and Liliana came to church with their kids this week and liked it, and this coming Sunday we are going to have dinner with them and an awesome young couple in the ward, so that's exciting! Bruno told us that it's getting easier for him to believe in God, which is a huge step from where he was before; it's going really well. We went to KFC (they have that here!) and ate a Valentine's day meal and it was pretty funny because everyone else eating there were couples haha! I sure hope that I never spend another Valentine's day with another man... but it's the mission so it's totally okay.

Alrighty love you dad! Have a good day at work if you're there, and if not, have fun doing nothing you sick dog!

Hello, Elder Valentine!

It’s been an incredibly crazy week for me. As I said last time, this was my RootsTech week, the busiest week of the year for me—and probably the most stressful. I promise that tomorrow I will write a good description of the week for you, along with some pictures. You’ll have that in your inbox for next week if I can’t get it to you early enough. But here’s a tender mercy:

I had major events I was responsible for every day last week. I was up on the main stage in front of 10,000 people at the Salt Palace and 100,000 people watching from home and church buildings around the world. I did live TV style interviews also seen by that same group of people. I was in charge of major partner meetings and other events. With all that—plus Mom’s cake competition that she’ll tell you about—there was just no way I could miss any of it. I asked Brother Gibby to give me a blessing on Tuesday so I could make it through the week.

So what happened? I made it through the week without problem. RootsTech was a huge success! Then, last night, just after we got home from Salt Lake, I started to feel sick to my stomach. By the middle of the night I was throwing up. Yep. I came down with stomach flu, but it was right AFTER RootsTech! Isn’t that amazing? If that would have happened any time earlier it would have been catastrophic. But as it turned out I was able to stay home from church without any problem and get better without missing anything!! Such a huge blessing!

We are all pretty exhausted from the last few weeks. Your mother in particular has been working so hard on costumes for the kids plays and her cake and our ward Valentine social and taking care of all our needs and on and on and on. She has been getting about 3-4 hours of sleep a night. We’re all worn out!

I’m still achy and dizzy from the flu and have a bit of a fever, so I’ll go now. I just wanted to share that tender mercy with you.

Hope that YOU are doing well and YOU are feeling well! This week I will contact Utah State about your scholarship and getting re-admitted and classes, etc. I’ll have a report for you by our next email.

I look forward to hearing from you tomorrow!
Love,

Dad
