April 3 Letters to and from Mom and Dad

Hey dad!

Since I sent you mom's letter too, you'll see this twice, but it's funny because one of my responsibilities in the office is to coordinate returning missionary travel, and so I had to make the request for my group to go home! It was super weird because the first time I did it it was for missionaries who seemed way older than me in the mission who have been home for a while, and I just went through the process for myself! I do this "itinerary call" to ask missionaries a few questions (what their stake is, what airport they will be going to, parents emails, etc.) and it became known in the mission as the "trunky call" (because it's a trunky call, duh), and it's a big deal. Like sister missionaries cry when I call them to ask them those questions and even the Junior comp of a trunky call victim will be like "oooh you just got your trunky call! You're so old" and stuff like that (I don't call it the trunky call, President Amorim banned it haha but that's basically what it's known by), so anyway; doing it for myself was pretty anticlimactic. "Hello Elder Valentine, I have a few questions for you. Oh wait, I already know the answers. See ya." Haha! But yeah I'm pretty happy about the arrival time!

I also enjoyed Elder Sabin's talk. He used a quote that I liked . "my strength is as the strength of ten (men?) because my heart is pure." It made me think about how being 100% in the gospel and not 98% is not only easier, but brings that power of total conversion! I also liked Elder Ballards talk on goals. It was something I needed to hear both for my mission and as something that I want to apply after. I also really enjoyed Elder Renlund's talk. There is just something really special about the sacred Apostolic calling, and it was so evident to me in Elder Renlund's talk, as well as Elder Rasbands and Elder Stevenson's. They all gave great talks and my testimony was strengthened that all three of them are really called to be the Lord's Apostles. Elder Renlund talked about the difference God sees between the sinner and the sin, and that God gave is Son to clean the sin, which cannot be tolerated, but emphasized that He did it out of love for the sinner. Elder Christofferson's talkd was good; I like that he put a twist on "practice what you preach" by saying "preach what you practice!" that's totally applicable to all members! And President Uchtdorf's talk on fear was great as well. I felt like a major theme of this General Conference was coming to know God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost, and becoming more like the Savior. What a great General Conference! I explained a bit in mom's email how we watched it, but for the one's that were too late at night, we watched them here in the office, and the others we watched at the chapel. We had plans to bring a lot of investigators, but the only ones who showed up were this new little portuguese family we found, kind of like Bruno and Liliana. They loved it! It was awesome.

I had read on LDS.org beforehand about President Nelson's challenge, and I want to to it so bad! I just don't know if I can do it on the mission... if I don't do so now I'll definitely do it right as soon as I leave.

Did I say that there is a new senior couple in the office too? I am currently distributing my tasks to Elder Peterson, Sister Hunt, and Elder Trindade. It takes 3 to do my job! ;)

Did I also tell you that my camera has some silly issues? I'll fix it soon.

Anyway, I'll have to look at that college email you sent me. :( talk to you later! Love you dad!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Hey, Elder Spencer! I’m in your same time zone! It’s 8:16 AM as I’m writing this. I’m in my hotel room downtown London. I got into London yesterday about 2. I’ll be in London until Wednesday then we go up to Birmingham for some meetings with archives and to attend two days of a family history conference. I fly back on Saturday! You asked me about how many times to London recently. This is my fourth time in about 18 months, and I’ll be coming back again in October. Then me and Mom are planning to come over next year in the spring. I seriously know London better than most US cities! I really love it here.

General Conference was awesome! How did you watch it? At the mission home or at a ward building? Or with members? What was your favorite talk? Elder Holland was awesome, as always. I loved Elder Oaks. President Eyring’s talk about “gathering our families” was the perfect family history and temple talk!! I got a million texts from my team during the talk because we were all so excited about it. But I think my favorite might be Elder Sabin’s talk. He reminded me so much of Elder Maxwell. I loved his analogies!

We are gearing up to do the Joseph Smith activity again in 2 weeks. Remember how awesome that was? I’m really excited to put it on again. My ward has changed so much that many people and youth have not seen it. Plus I’ve made some tweaks to make it even better this time!

Mom will probably (or has already probably) told you this, but it was pretty cool to get the email confirming your flight schedule home. We were driving to Salt Lake to go see “Seven Brides for Seven Husbands” at the Hale Center theatre. When Mom read that aloud I started crying. What’s super cool is that you’ll get home in time to go to the fireworks! My plan is to take you to get a big, fat, juicy American hamburger, then to see the fireworks! Sorry…that’s not nice of me to make you feel all trunks!! Focus, Elder Valentine!

I’d love to hear what message from General Conference really resonated with you. There were lots of talks that seemed geared to bishops! One thing for sure I took away is I need to spend more time with my priests and laurels. Oh, you know that challenge President Nelson issued about marking all the scriptures on Christ in the topical guide? I’ve been doing that for a couple weeks now. It’s really cool. It takes a long time to really do it right. I print of each page of the topical guide and look up the scriptures in my paper scriptures. I mark the scripture then write a little summary of my own on the topical guide print off. It’s been really helpful to improve my scripture study. I highly recommend it!

Hope your P day is great and relaxing! It’s always the highlight of the week to hear from you! Pictures are always welcomed!!

Love,

Dad

Hi mom! Haha you know what's funny? I made the request for my own flight home! That's part of what I do in the office; make the return flight requests. So it was kind of a strange experience doing the whole process for myself haha! I'm pretty happy about the arrival time - sometimes missionaries don't get home until like 10 PM and I was going to be sad if that was the case on the 4th of July, so it worked out well!

Sounds like you had a good week! I'm sure Ethan had a really fun birthday. Laser tag wins the heart of any boy hands down. :) What song did you sing for your broadway concert?

Yeah I got to see all of the session of general conference! Because of the time change, we watched the morning sessions at the chapel at 5 PM, the priesthood session on Sunday morning at the chapel, and the afternoon sessions at 9 PM here in the office. Haha it was nice to have these good computers to watch conference on. President Amorim has tried to make it so that us office elders have not had "more" than the rest of the mission (hence not having a smart phone and also not having a car like most mission offices), but we still get to have little nice things like having enough computers for all of us to write on Pday (which is a problem almost anywhere outside of the office) and stuff like that. Oh also! President Amorim talked to us in the office this last week, and he told me that I will be transferred out. Elder Peterson is (a previous zone leader) is going to replace me. He got here yesterday, and I'll train him this week and then stay in the office for the first week of the next transfer to give Elder Peterson 2 weeks to learn everything, and then leave. President didn't tell me where I'm going - this next weekend is transfers so I'll know by the time next Pday comes around.

This week was pretty good - we're hitting some walls in some our investigators progression, and we are trying to help them overcome their problems. I'm learning day by day how important it is to have the spirit in our planning, studies and practices, and lessons, because without the spirit we won't be able to really help our investigators. So it's been a good experience!

I got your package this week! I haven't had a chance to take pictures yet (my camera is still with problems but I'll figure it out soon) but I loved it! Haha I like the stickers. I saw them before I read the letter and I was really confused at why you sent them. The socks are crazy! They're awesome! Also with the card - will it work for Portugal already? I'll have to call because there are no chase banks here. I just haven't done it yet because I am not sure how everything will work.

I'm actually back in an apartment that I was in when I first came to the office - it's super small but a lot nicer and better insulated than the other one. We are currently 5 in the house because of Elder Peterson and the whole quadrupla companionship thing, so it's super cramped but definitely better than the other house haha! We have a washing machine but no dryer, which is typical for missionary houses. We just have drying racks to hang our clothes up. It's on the third floor - whenever I get my camera in order I'll take a picture of it. I don't know how it is in biggish cities in the US, but a lot of times you will have houses/apartments that are a part of a huge long strip of buildings, so they are long but skinny. If that makes any sense. Or you could just look up my address and see what it looks like if you want - the address is Avenida Fernão de Magalhães 497, Porto. The view looks out onto another strip of buildings haha! It's not great but during a morning run we can get to the top of a hill that has a pretty sweet view of the outskirts of Porto with lots of hills and stuff. Here's a funny thing - NO ONE knows their neighbors in Portugal. No one. Partly because everyone lives in apartments and so it's not like there is a yard to take care of or a front porch to relax on, so you never know who lives where unless you're inside the house. And we aren't supposed to proselyte in the buildings we live in (something about making landlords angry because of complaining clients), and we are the only ones on our floor of the building (it has a super tiny little landing outside the door so there's not even room for another apartment), so I don't really know the neighbors unfortunately. The furniture is pretty sparse in this apartment. Others have more, I think it's just because of the size for ours. We have two study tables and a little square table that we use for all 5 of us to study, 2 bunk beds (elder peterson is currently on a mattress on the ground), a fridge, an oven, one bookshelf, and 4 clothes racks (basically a bar to hold hangers) and that's literally it besides chairs! Well there is this super tiny table thing in the kitchen that barely sits 2 people too. Haha I'll take a video and some pictures to show you!

Today we went to a mini golf place which was fun! It was super chill and relaxing which was much needed. I tied with Elder Judd for first place of the 5 of us.

I'll write a letter to dad real quick. Love you mom! :)

Hello, Elder! Guess what!! We got an email on Thursday from the Church travel department! It had all of your flight info and you are coming in at 7:30 pm on the Fourth of July! So we'll have time to get a hamburger and watch fireworks to celebrate you coming home! It was just exciting to see it officially in an email to us. 😊 You probably already knew, or Dad already wrote about it, but that's ok cuz it was very exciting!

This week was a good week for me. Not super busy or stressful! First time in a LONG time! I cleaned my room this weekend (seriously I hadn't deep cleaned it since before Christmas even though I really wanted to!), I got enough sleep, performed in my choir concert, did my visiting teaching on the first day of the month, went for a walk with Dad, and best of all, watched Conference! 😄 It was really good.

Last Tuesday evening we celebrated Ethan's birthday at Boondocks. We did bowling, laser tag (my very first time ever), and played some arcade games. We ate dinner at Chick-fi-la. We had lots of fun, and I had the highest score in bowling and the lowest score in laser tag, ha ha!

Thursday Was Ethan's actual birthday so I picked him up from school on his lunch and took him out to eat. We went to Kneaders. One reason we celebrated his birthday on Tuesday is because Dad's friend Star Hall got us tickets to go with them to see "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" at the Hale Center Theater and he got mixed up on the dates. So we asked Ethan if we could celebrate on a different day and he was a really good sport. So while we were gone, Amanda took him to Cafe Rio for a birthday dinner. He got an iPod for his birthday that he partly paid for himself. He seemed like he had a good birthday.

Friday night was my "Broadway Bingo" concert for choir. I sang a little solo and it was really fun. 😊

Did you get to watch all of Conference? It was so good!

The kiddos are on Spring Break this week but Dad is in London so we're not really doing anything... and I have to work except Tuesday I have off. Yay!

Spring is in full force here, we've had some rainy days, but lots of sunny days too so the tulips are blooming, the leaves on the trees are coming back, and the grass is starting to green up. I love it!

I think you have a few more questions from last time that you didn't have time to answer, so I won't ask any new ones just yet. Tell me about your week, how the investigators are doing, anything new or different that happened this week, etc.

Love you so much!! Can't wait to hear from you! 😊

Love, Mom

Elder Valentine's Porto Apartment

This is the view Elder Valentine has coming out of his apartment. I've captured both ends of the street. His apartment is the one with the fruit stand in front of it. There is a door to the right; that's the door he uses!

Reply to "Greetings from Dad" (March 27)

Hi Dad!

I'm in the process of saving your youngest daughter from boyfriend heartbreak as we speak; just thought you'd like to know! :) Haha it's going well. She's got lots to think about! ;)

I looked back at a letter I wrote to Kimberly a while ago, and I was talking about how we will probably look back on our life and be so much more grateful for being busy and at times stressed out, rather than looking back and wishing we would have done more with our time. It's so true! Just like you said, non stop blessings!

I'm sorry you're doing all this school stuff for me! But hey, I'm like 7000 miles away. I can only do so much!

England again! Wow! What are you doing there this time? Can you count the amount of trips you've taken in the last year and eight months?

What am I learning from serving in the office; well, specifically in the office, it's been a lot of responsibility, for sure! I've never had to worry so much about doing things 100% right, because in school you can mess up and the only affect is on your grade; but in life and at work, you can't just mess up and be okay with it! It effects a lot more people than just myself! I've also had some experiences dealing with business and talking to people in formal settings, which is something I didn't have a lot of experience in. Sitting in meetings, placing orders, talking to people when things go wrong; stuff like that. I've been blessed with some really powerful spiritual experiences talking to people in lessons and on the road. I've truly been guided! On Saturday Elder Wait and I were teaching a lesson to a less active man and his non-member wife, who seems to know that the church is true but doesn't want to take the commitment, and also has some past memories that seem to impede her from believing wholeheartedly in God. I turned to 2 Nephi 2:25 and Alma 34:32, and told her that "men are that they might have joy" but that our part is to "prepare to meet God," and that she was impeding herself from progressing. Being around a member for so long and knowing the church and it's teachings but not accepting them out of "laziness" essentially, she might not have another chance after this life because she rejected this one. I let her know that, but really lovingly, and the spirit was super strong. And Elder Wait and the member that was there with us also were very inspired with answers and testimonies. It was really cool. And just "preaching repentance" in general, to everyone, and bearing my testimony of Christ - it is SO good to talk about eternal truth. I love it! I don't know if that really answered any of your questions haha!

I had an interview with President Amorim yesterday after church. That was cool! It was also after a very nice lunch at the Mission Home with our district, because President was at our chapel for our ward conference. We got up to a frequency of 102 yesterday, which is higher than the ward has had in a really long time! Anyway, interview; it was really good! It was only like my 4th with him in my mission, so I enjoy the chance to talk to him. This one was all about good stuff - it was very uplifting to hear his insights and learn from him. He told me that I was the best Executive he's had since he started his mission, which was cool. I don't like need praise nor do I want to ever gloat, but it was nice to hear!

I too know that God's true Gospel is restored! I love that we can know. It is so assuring and rewarding to search for knowledge and receive answers, and I am grateful to God for it. I love the Gospel!

Love you dad!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Elder Valentine,

Good morning (afternoon for you), Elder Valentine! I trust that you are well and happy and well-fed and wearing yourself out in the service to our Heavenly Father. Yesterday was one of those “wear yourself out” days for me at the church. My day started with a stake bishops meeting at 6:30 and continued all the way through home teaching until about 5:30. Sounds like a typical day for you, right? Non stop church!! Non stop blessings!

What are learning from your service in the office? What blessings are you receiving? What tender mercies are you experiencing?

On Friday I’ll be paying your registration fee at USU so you (me) can register for classes. I’ll have some additional information on orientation and next steps after I get you registered. I know you don’t want to think about the real world, and I don’t want you to! But I’ll keep you updated so you know what to expect when you return (gulp!).

The best experiences I had last week were at the temple. Tuesday all the youth in the ward did baptisms in the Bountiful temple. It was so awesome! I had the blessing of baptizing Anna and Ethan. Then on Friday I went to an endowment session with your Mom. It was also so great! I love the temple! I’m excited for you to go to the temple when you return. I’m really looking forward to going to the temple with you.

Next week at this time I’ll be in England. I’m flying out on Saturday, so I’m not sure if I can email you on Monday, but I may be able to. I’ll at least email you before I leave. London is become my second  home!

Spencer, I know the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord’s true church on this earth. I know that Christ lives and loves us. I know that you are in His employ. I know that you are being blessed and will continue to be blessed due to your service. I love you and continue to be inspired by you. Thank you so much for serving!

Love,
Dad

"Answering Questions" (March 27 Young V and Old People V)

Hi mom!

Thanks for answering all of my questions! I liked your answers. They were very descriptive!

The parable of the good samaritan is so symbolic! That's so awesome! I had no idea about that. Have you ever read Jesus the Christ? I think you would really like reading it if you haven't. The book is just very descriptive and makes me think about the Gospel's (the books in the New Testament) so much more profoundly. But I have never heard that parallelism in this parable!

I haven't gotten the package yet. It'll hopefully come in this week! Also, I haven't gotten around to ordering the scriptures - but I gotta do it soon! (oh I forgot to mention about my interview with President Amorim that he basically asked me if I wanted to stay in the office or not - I said I would like to go to a different area, but it's still up in the air. He said that if it was purely his choice, he would keep me in the office until I leave!)

I like that scripture in Esther - I read Esther for the first time a few months ago out of curiosity but I didn't really study it intensely, and thus didn't even remember that scripture. I really like it! I don't know if I mentioned that I'm trying to read the Book of Mormon twice (Portuguese) , The Doctrine and Covenants (Portuguese), and the New Testament (English, because I've never read the whole thing, and the translation is hard to follow in Portuguese), all before July 5th That's the goal! It's going well so far! I started it at the beginning of this year. It's also mostly apart from my personal study hour, because I want to spend that time studying for the day for investigators and stuff. So it's mostly in the morning and at night after we get home.

Church building - the "chapel" that we are in is a renovated house. More like a mansion. It's got 2 floors and a basement, but it's really big! the top floor has like 8 or 9 rooms, the main floor has a big room where we have sacrament meeting and a kitchen and stuff, and the basement has a few more rooms, one for the high council and another for Gospel Principles. It's big enough for the 80ish people that show up weekly, but as the ward grows (which it will!) it won't fit much more than 110 to like 130 people. There is a stake center, which is an actual chapel built by the church, though it's smaller, I think, than most chapel's in Utah! I served there when I was in Porto 2 at the beginning of my mission, and we have zone conferences and other meetings there. It's hard to get to though - it's right on a freeway so walking is a struggle! My building is the Porto 1 ward now. Our building has a piano that I play (oh yeah, I play the piano for sacrament meeting. I can struggle through most of the hymns haha! There was two ward choir numbers for the ward conference yesterday, one was "a child's prayer" (in portuguese, of course. It's called "oração de uma criança") and another called "I'll find you my friend," a song that also has a portuguese translation. You can find it on youtube, I'm sure. I was SO nervous to play either of the songs because I can't practice the piano since that's not my duty and I'm just not super good, but I played both and it wasn't perfect but it was good enough that I felt the spirit there! It was a very real tender mercy that God helped me play as well as I did!) The Stake center has an organ that can play all of the hymns by itself! (do they do that in the chapels in Utah? I think they did it because they knew that there wouldn't be a lot of people who knew how to play the piano) I'll send you a picture of both chapels, if I can find them. Our chapel is basically on the same road as the office, which is super convenient, and it's around the corner from the mission home, also super convenient. It's on the very east of what people still consider Porto - it's up a hill from the big soccer stadium the "estadio do dragão" (dragon stadium) and any farther than the stadium and local people will use other names to describe where they live. There's a big catholic church and a mcDonalds on the street over from the chapel. :) Whenever a meeting house is a renovated home, the church does a really good job at making it look more church-y and put the big black plaque with the church name on it and it looks nice.

Don't worry - I'll continue this letter in a bit. I just wanted to send it now to let you know that I'm on and if you want me to wait to respond to more questions I can, but I a little extra time today so I will probably be able to write more! love ya!

Yeah playing the piano went well! I definitely have big goals to get a lot better when I get home.

So for groceries - there are like 5 main supermarket chains in Portugal - "Continente", "Pingo Doce," "Mini Preço." "Lidl," and "Jumbo." Lidl and Jumbo are less common but are like the best. I've only ever been in Jumbo once though! And Lidl just a couple times. Continente feels like a Walmart but looks like a Target. If that makes any sense. It's the biggest and therefore has more stuff, normally, but is a little more pricey. Pingo Doce is my favorite; it has the best tasting food of almost everything. Mini Preço is the cheapest but it's for a reason. The food is lower quality and they don't have a lot of options for stuff. There is a Mini Preço right by our house, so we have been using that recently. When I was with Elder Yoder we went to a Continente which was part of a mall by that stadium I talked about and took a bus back home (there is a bus stop right in front of our house that makes it convenient to get back from the stadium, but it isn't worth it to get to the office). I get 160 euros per month to spend on groceries, a haircut, toiletries, stuff like that. This transfer we have been doing super well at buying food together, which makes it cheaper to make food! I probably spend like 20 euros a week on food. We've made so much stuff this transfer - I made Stew and Buscuits, and I made navajo tacos (which were super good, by the way), a spinach chicken pasta bake thing which was actually really yummy, and I made banana pancakes and syrup using the brown sugar syrup recepie you sent me! It was kind of runny but tasted super good. And the other elders have made soups and spaghetti and chili and a couple other things. We actually eat about ZERO meals in the apartment, because it is super inconvenient to stop working in the office, walk home, eat, and walk back. It takes too much time. So we have been making food either the night before or the morning of, and taking it to the office. It's worked out well! We probably eat at a members house like twice a transfer. Not that much. But they are good days when we do! Typical breakfast - lately I've been just having a bowl of cereal (totally not the same. The cereal is pretty bland and the milk doesn't help, but it works!) and yogurt and a fruit, normally a banana. I've also made omelets, and I made pancakes a few times, though not that often because they take long.

Okay that's question two down! I'll answer more next pday. Love you mom!

Dear Elder Valentine/Spencer/Son,

It seems like I'm always cramped for time when I write you, or it's very late, or something. So even though today is still the day we just heard from you, and you won't get this for a week, I decided to write to you for your next Pday. :)

Did you ever read those talks I sent? Did anything stand out to you? It's ok if you didn't get a chance. I know you're busy!

You asked me some questions I haven't answered yet so I will answer them now.

Your questions: What is Ryleigh like? And Porter? I don't really know them haha! What is your favorite Bible story and why? (Either old testament or new testament or both) Can you pinpoint a moment when you really knew the church was true? Or that the Restoration was true?

What is Ryleigh like? Well first of all, it's the strangest thing how genetics work. Each person is unique and individual, mostly because they are a 50/50 blend of two people. But I swear that's not always true, and it's amazing how similar children can be to just one of their parents! So in a nutshell, Ryleigh is just like Amanda! Like it's weird how much she is like her. It's like she was cloned. Ryleigh looks just like Amanda did as a baby, sounds like her, and acts like her. She is so adorable and sweet, but then at the same time she can be really stubborn and has tantrums sometimes, and when she has a tantrum, watch out! She is loud. She is really super friendly and affectionate. She loves attention. She warms up to new people really fast. She has a cute laugh and a big smile! She isn't talking much yet, but she walks around pretending to talk- her babbling is so stinking cute! She HATES baths. We don't know why. And she is afraid of loud noises, and gets very afraid of a lot of things easily. For instance, when Ethan was in the play and he had to wear wolf makeup, she was SO afraid. Like crying so hard she didn't take a breath for a second. She was afraid of the mannequin heads we used for the funny dance we did at the valentine social. (They are just plain white...) Oh, and she's afraid of Ethan's millennium falcon toy. She cries every time he turns it on. Things like that. It's sad and funny at the same time. She also knows who things belong to and she likes to pick things up and give them to the person. She will sometimes go into the mudroom and get shoes and take them to their owners. Or if my purse is on a chair she'll see it and try to bring it to me, sometimes taking things out of it one at a time and bringing them to me. It's cute. We love her. She's a sweet little spirit.

Porter is the cutest baby boy! He was very attached to his mama for a long time, but now is his daddy's buddy. He was also a really quiet baby, but now that he is almost two his personality is coming out and he talks a little bit and laughs and runs around with Lincoln and is really friendly. He looks just like Kimberly did as a baby/toddler. He's very sweet. His eyes are so big and blue. He just looks up at you with those eyes and has you wrapped around his little finger. He's also very heavy! He is like a brick. He was pretty chubby for a while, but now that he's a toddler he is more normal, but he just is solid and heavy. He knows how to make all the car noises when he plays and he is all boy, but he is sweet and cuddly - he has a stuffed doggie that he has to have to go to sleep.

My favorite Bible story: I have more than one, but I think if I HAVE to pick a #1 favorite I will have to say It's the story of Esther. She saved her people by relying on Heavenly Father, even though she knew she was risking everything to do it. The part I love the most is the scripture that says:

14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? (Esther 4:14)

We should never be afraid to do what the Lord asks us to do, because he raises us up to do the work we need to do. It's similar to 1Nephi 3:7  but with an additional layer to it. He puts us where we need to be to do a work and we don't want to mess up Heavenly Fathers plan for us and building up the kingdom by being afraid to speak up or move forward. Whenever we have to do something out of our comfort zone, we should think, "who knoweth whether I have been put here for such a time as this". I love that. I know Heavenly Father has a plan for each of us. We just need to submit to his will in every situation.

Your question: Can you pinpoint a time when you knew the Church was true, or the Restoration?
For me it's hard to pinpoint, because I feel like I was born with a testimony of the Church and the Restoration. But I have also had many experiences when I have felt a witness that has confirmed it over and over again. For example: When I was a Primary age child, I had a picture book about Joseph Smith and the First Vision. I loved to read that book and look at the pictures. I felt drawn to it and felt a really strong spirit when I would read it. I felt the Spirit very strong when I was baptized. Seminary really strengthened my testimony. I took Moroni's challenge while in Seminary and prayed to know if the Book of Mormon is true, and I received a feeling of peace and joy after praying, and while it was not spectacular or obvious, I couldn't deny that it was the Spirit I was feeling, that my answer was, "you know its true, you have always known it." I feel such peace and warmth and happiness when I am at church, or at home reading scriptures, listening to Conference talks, doing service, paying tithing - I could never doubt of the truthfulness of the gospel. I wish I was like some who have some really specific day or time that they knew, but I guess I haven't needed that because I just know.

Well, Spencer, all of the above was written last Tuesday night. I didn't send it so I'm just going to add on to it now and tell you about the rest of my week. It was overall a busy kind of stressful week for me, but good. The stress was just from so much to do without a break, but you know all about that I'm sure. It was all good though.

The beginning of the week, Lincoln and Porter were staying with us while Kimberly and Kevin went to Las Vegas for a work conference for Kevin. I took care of them Monday through Wednesday, as well as watching Damian and Naomi, so it was a busy three days. Kids can wear you out!

Wednesday night I went to choir (it was a nice break away from the constant kid tending!) and I did my solo in front of the whole choir and I wasn't even nervous. It went really well. (The concert is this coming week!) When I got home from choir at 10:00pm, Porter was asleep, but Lincoln was still up so I had to try and get him to sleep before I could go to bed. Kimberly and Kevin were getting home at midnight, so the boys slept in our front room so that they could just come in and take the boys without keeping any of us up.

Thursday I worked and then in the evening we went to Anna's violin recital. She's the oldest of Ann's students now! Crazy. You can't believe how much Ann's little girl and boy have grown! They of course play in the recitals too. It will be fun if you can come to the next one.

Friday I made another cake. The 7th cake in 8 weeks! That's a record. I made about $50 profit on this one. It still doesn't work out as a good hourly pay, because it takes a whole day to bake and decorate a cake, but usually I don't get paid at all, so it was nice to get something for a change! I also went visiting teaching Friday and tended Ryleigh a bit. In the evening, Dad and I went to the temple. We saw Elizabeth Tromlitz' mom and dad and talked to them for a few minutes. Sounds like Elizabeth is doing really well on her mission. They asked lots of questions about you and we love to tell how you are doing. Everyone is amazed when they hear that you'll be home in a few short months! That reminds me.....did you know that TODAY (for me tomorrow, today for you as you read this) marks 100 days left for you! Wednesday will be double digits at 99. Wow!!  So anyway, Saturday Anna went to Prom, and Ethan went to see the Lion King broadway show in Salt Lake with Grandma and Grandpa Folkman and cousin Robert. Grandpa took them for their birthdays. Ethan loved it! And Anna was jealous. :) I went with Kimberly to watch the Women's Conference Session at our stake center. It was a good meeting! I took some good notes on each speaker. I loved President Eyring's talk. It made me excited for Conference next weekend! The meeting got over at 7:15, so Dad and I still had time to go out to dinner to Texas Roadhouse. We had to squeeze in a date because I'm not going to see him much over the next couple of weeks. He goes to London next Saturday, and the days before that this week are really busy for him.

Today at church, Laura Cleveland (the sister who Dad knows from work who just moved here and whose husband just passed away three weeks ago) gave the Gospel Doctrine lesson. First of all, not many women who are going through losing their husband would be taking on a calling like that so soon. But she is amazing!! She gave one of the best gospel doctrine lessons I've ever heard. Dad says she loves to read church doctrine books and is super smart. So she knows a lot. She talked about the parable of the Good Samaritan and gave insights that I've never heard before. I have a completely new understanding of that parable now. Usually we think of it in terms of serving others, doing our duty, "being a good samaritan". But it is totally an analogy of the Savior!! It seems so obvious now, but I never got it before. So I would like to share with you what I learned about it from her:

"A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho"  - Jerusalem = Holy City, Jericho = Unholy City, and to get to Jericho from Jerusalem, you had to go lower.

"...and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment..." - the raiment, or clothing represents COVENANTS (think of temple garments) I never knew that!

"...and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead." - half dead = spiritual death

"But a certain Samaritan...came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him..."  - a Samaritan is half Jew and half Gentile. Jew = Holy, Gentile = Unholy. The Samaritan represents the Savior who is half immortal and half mortal!

"And went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine..." - Oil and wine represent the Savior in that he is the "Anointed One" (oil) and he atoned with his blood, hence the wine. She also explained that Gethsemane means "the place of the olive press" and when olives are pressed, the liquid that comes out of the olives is red before it is refined. So it is even amazingly symbolic that he was literally pressed like an olive when he atoned in Gethsemane and his red blood flowed just like the olives.

"...and brought him to an inn, and took care of him." The inn represents the church! We imperfect and spiritually wounded beings come to church so the Savior can take care of us! (they that are sick need a physician, not they that are whole, as the scripture goes.)

"And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee." - The amount of money he had to spend was open-ended, or infinite = the infinite atonement! And He will come again.

Isn't that amazing???? Oh I love it. That parable will never be the same to me again. Yes we need to be good Samaritans to those in need, but it is a symbol of Jesus Christ. Wonderful!!!

I love the gospel, I love my Savior, and I know this Church is the true and living Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter-Days, restored through the prophet Joseph Smith after a long apostasy, and because of the restoration we have living prophets today! They give us the counsel that we need to navigate through a wicked world, and they know the Savior and speak for him! It's so wonderful!

Have you received your package yet? Have you ordered your scriptures yet?

Here's some questions for you:

What is the church building like? How does it compare to size with ours in Utah - how many rooms, do they have an organ in the chapel, or just a piano or even just a keyboard? What does it look like from the outside? Where in town is it located?

Where do you buy your groceries? How much do you spend on groceries in a month? How many meals do you eat in your apartment and how many do you eat out or at members homes? What is your typical breakfast?

What is your new apartment like? Nice? Run down? larger or smaller than the last one? Do you have laundry machines in your apartment? What floor is it on? How's the view? What furniture do you have? what are your neighbors like?

Describe a typical Pday. List what you do usually, in what order, and what times.

Are there any items you brought with you from home that you never use? Have you bought any souvenirs? Have you given/thrown away anything that you brought with you?

Who has written to you that surprises you, who do you hear from the most (besides me and Dad), what has been your favorite letter and/or package that you have received on your mission?

What traditions do missionaries have that everyone does?

If you can't answer all of those right now, it's ok. It will give you some things to write about over the next few times. :)

Ok, it's late! I gotta go sleep. Can't wait to talk to you tomorrow! Love you tons!

Love, Mom

"March Update" (March 21)

This email was sent to everyone:

Dear Everyone,

Another quick update; Bruno and Liliana are still progressing well! I probably won't be here for their baptism, though, because they are planning on waiting for a while. We'll keep helping them progress and say lots of prayers!

We're also working with a 15 year old, José Mario, who should be getting baptized in the next couple weeks! He is SUPER elect and is so ready, we just need to help him pick a date and get him in the water!

Spring is coming and it makes missionary work just that much better! People are generally out later and it makes contacting at night a blast!

I was pondering this week about why Christ Atoned for our sins. He didn't need to - He wasn't obligated by anyone (as in, it was His choice to accept God's plan), and, as the only perfect Human to live on earth, He was the only One who didn't need to worry about Justice going against Him. So why? It's because He loves us! It's truly 100% love for us. We have a Savior who loves us that much. I think that's something to ponder about.

That's all! Have a great week!

"Springtime in Utah" (March 14 emails from Elder V and Parents V)

Hi mom!

Bruno and Liliana are doing well - they talked to us this last Sunday and said that they were thinking about pushing back there baptism until they could be in a more financially stable situation. So they might be getting baptized like later this year - for me, that's okay; my only worry is that during all of that waiting time, they will be tempted too much and stop being as strong as they currently are. But they said something really cool - they want me and Elder Judd to come back to Portugal next year or a little after when they get sealed in the temple! Haha it was really awesome. So that's a little sad, but they said they won't stop going to church or having lessons or whatever - we'll just need to do our best to keep them strong, and after the mission I'll just have to keep in good contact with them for the same reasons.

Oh my goodness. The ward is so big! Haha I'm not even kidding, the primary is almost double the size of the ward I'm in right now. We're averaging 78 for sacrament attendance. That's so crazy!

I'm glad the funeral went so well. Ethan told me a little bit about his spending time with Laura's kid, and he said he felt good serving.

Haha well I won't talk too much about the accident with Anna. That's sad that the adults were rude about it! Like, talk about a confidence-killer and respect-loser for them. Haha it kind of reminded me of the different types of people I have met while proselyting here; like, most of the time people are a little impatient and don't listen but nothing too bad, and sometimes people are nice in their decline, but other times I meet people who I just don't understand how their brains work - like, there is a level of inconsiderate-ness (not a word but whatever) and, just, unkindness that I really can't understand. It makes me so glad to be "enlightened" by the gospel, because I really think that's what it is! And granted, I can't judge people because I know there are all kinds of situations people find themselves in, but I hope you understand what I mean. I'm glad to be the person I am because of Christ, and I'm very grateful for it.

Relief Society! That's awesome! Haha it sounds like what I've felt sometimes on the mission - every Sunday we worry and stress about getting people to church (this last sunday we had 6 investigators in church!) and making sure they interact with members and that members do the same, and that their questions are answered and they don't feel uncomfortable, and we try to mark appointments with members to do missionary work, and we get asked by all sorts of ward leaders to do little tasks for whatever reason... anyway! It's so fun but it'll sure be different when I don't have to worry about that kind of stuff, in a sad way and in a good way.

Amanda has a boyfriend! And you like him! WHOO! Haha I'll get the details from her!

The weather is warm here too - I'm in a short sleeved shirt today!

Four way companionship - well, it's just like a normal companionship, just with two other missionaries ;) for real though, it's pretty fun! We switch every day who we work with - yesterday I was with Elder Wait, today I'm with Elder Trindade, tomorrow I'll probably be with Elder Judd. It's stressful sometimes to plan or do companion study or do companionship inventories (like, we talk about our problems and how the companionship is doing) because there are so many of us, but so far we have stayed pretty organized which has been a blessing. We live in the SMALLEST HOUSE EVER (oh yeah, we ditched the other house because we wanted to not be there haha) for four elders, but that as well has been pretty good. God is blessing us right now, for sure, because I feel like this would normally be a stressful thing but it's been going really well lately. :)

Random fact - I have to sign lots of stuff here in the office for mail, notarizing things, etc. President Amorim sends out a "welcome packet" to new missionaries (he didn't have it put together when I came out because he was new) and I have a letter in the packet informing new missionaries about some specific stuff to bring (that would have been nice to get when we were preparing, haha) and I sign each letter. Also, this last week, the contact manager our mission has with a phone company came to the office to negotiate a new contract with us, and Elder Wait and I were the only ones who knew anything (I take care of the mission phones btw) so we had an hour long meeting, in portuguese, negotiating a contract. It was pretty official. I felt cool. ;) We are in a crucial battle against flies in the office - they come in swarms and we are killing SO many. There have been lots of casualties. On the flies side. It's a long battle but so far we are winning haha.

What is Ryleigh like? And Porter? I don't really know them haha! What is your favorite Bible story and why? (Either old testament or new testament or both) Can you pinpoint a moment when you really knew the church was true? Or that the Restoration was true?

Love you mom! Have a great week! :)

Love, Elder Valentine!

Hi Dad!

I'm glad that the service was spiritual. I only got to skim through your talks (I printed them off and will be looking at them tonight), but I can tell that you prepared super well for both talks. I hope that I can get to that level of being able to be prepared; but I'm also sure that there was a lot said that wasn't in your talks, which is the other thing I want to be able to do better, which is to talk by the Spirit after having prepared my best! I think that that balance, our own preparation and diligence vs. our dependence on God, is one of the most important principles I have come to realize on my mission, and it will be my "mission" for my whole life to not only understand the principle, but to be able to apply it into my life - because when I can get there, I feel like it'll be a good day to say the least!

Anyway, I'm glad it went well. I heard that Anna's play also went really well! She kind of mentioned a wardrobe malfunction but besides that I only heard good things haha!

Well! I guess I don't really have a lot for this week. I kind of explained Bruno and Liliana's situation to mom, and besides that, we are working with a pool of about 8 or 9 investigators that we are trying to get to progressing. We've been working hard and it's been fun to be in the quadrupla! I asked mom a couple questions and I'll ask you a couple too - what's your favorite scripture? Or if that's too hard you could pick on out of each of the standard works. Why is that one your favorite? (I also hope I haven't asked you these questions) What has been the biggest blessing for you since being called as the bishop? Can you remember the first time you really felt the Spirit?

Love you dad! I'll read your talks tonight. Thanks!

Elder Valentine,

Hello, my son. I hope you’re having a great week! It’s been a busy one for me. This past week was the funeral for my friend’s husband. He passed away on Friday and then service was on Wednesday at our stake center. The chapel and overflow were packed. I was a bit nervous about the details of the funeral. Usually a funeral home is involved and they take care of lot of small important things, but they didn’t have a mortuary involved at all so it was up to me. Because of the rareness of the cancer they donated his body to the study of the cancer. It makes me wonder what kind of doctor you will be. I don’t think you’ll be a researcher because I think you like people too much! I think that your time in the office has convinced you that you want to work with people more than research.

Anyway! The funeral was very spiritual. It’s obviously a very tough time, but also a peaceful and spiritual experience for all involved. I attached to this email the talk I gave, in case you want to read it. Also attached is the talk I gave Sunday. It was ward conference, and so the speakers were me and the stake president.

Along with the funeral and ward conference we basically spent all of our evenings at Anna’s play. I was at the temple on Saturday morning, thinking about how much you loved to go to the temple. We’ll go right when you get back so you don’t have to wait!

This email is pretty short, but I do have the two talks that you can read if you have time. I’m taking Mom to the Donny and Marie show this weekend, and she has VIP tickets to go backstage and see Donny! I hope all goes well with that, because if it does I should get the “husband of the year” award. If not, I may get the “biggest screw up of the year award”! So here’s for hoping it all goes well!

Have a great week! Love ya!

"Quick Greetings" (March 7 Dad and Spencer)

Hi Dad!

That's awesome about the zone conference and the lessons for the youth! It would have been so cool to do that when I was there - I didn't even go out with the missionaries to teach or anything. Although, I don't even remember having seen the missionaries that much, haha - only like twice, once for dinner and once when we helped move some stuff at an older sister's house. Anyway, how are the youth doing with it? What did you do for zone conference? There is a quote in Preach My Gospel that says something like "the spirituality of the ward will grow when missionary work is made a focus," and I can totally see how that is true. Members come closer, church meetings are more spiritual, the Church really grows when people are focused on the work! It's another thing that I want to keep with me for my whole life - a desire to be a part of missionary work!

That's sad that Brother Cleveland passed away. It's... interesting to think that these things can really happen to anyone. Anybody can be affected by a sickness or get in an accident, and it changes lives. It's one of the reasons that I am so grateful for the gospel; it gives us perspective and hope. I'm sure that God wants His children to always know of His love for us, especially during hard times.

I hope you're having fun in your meetings! Haha as fun as they can be. What have you been studying recently? Do you study things specifically for members, when needed? What is something that you've seen change in yourself from being a bishop?

Love you Dad! Have a good week!

Howdy, Elder! I’m at work right now but wanted to send a quick note to you. Last week—as you know—I was in Vermont. It was a good trip. It’s a beautiful place! Then the weekend was all about Anna’s Little Mermaid play as well as a really difficult yet spiritual experience which I’ll tell you about in a minute. Sunday I held a zone conference with all of my ward missionaries. We now have four adult ward missionaries plus all of the Laurels and all of the Priests. The Laurels and Priests have now been out on two visits as companions. They have taught the first lesson in Preach My Gospel twice, to two different families. This Sunday they are going out again to different families and are teaching lesson 2. I am so excited about this. I can feel the spirituality already increasing in our ward. I can feel the strength already growing in our Priests and Laurels!

Tomorrow I will be presiding over, conducting, and speaking at a funeral in our ward. This is for the Cleveland family that moved into our ward about a month ago. However, I have know the wife for a few years now. She directly reports to me at work and now I’m also her bishop. They moved to one of the new homes in our neighborhood after receiving a strong spiritual prompting that they should come here. The husband—Nathan—has had cancer for several years. Just in the past few months, though, the cancer got really aggressive. When Laura moved to our ward he was in bed at a hotel the entire time, too sick to even be there.

I was able to go to their home Friday morning and give Nathan a blessing of release. This was a profound spiritual experience. The veil is so thin. I could feel his Heavenly Father calling him home. In the blessing, the Spirit whispered that it was okay to let go, that his life and offering was acceptable to the Lord, that his family would be taken are of, and that His father was calling him home. It was a beautiful, sweet experience. Of course this is incredibly difficult for Laura to lose her husband. They are about me and mom’s age but have very young children, ages 4 and 5. She had great faith but it will be hard for a long time, maybe for the rest of her life. Yet she knows the Plan of Salvation is real, the Atonement is real, and that Jesus Christ lives and loves her. This is truly what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is all about.

Well, so much for quick! Now I need to run. Have a great week! Looking forward to your emails.
Love,

Dad

March! (Elder V and Parents V - March 7 2017)

Hi mom!

I'm so excited to see the play! Is it still going on? How many shows does she have left?

I didn't know Ethan was doing Choir - is he still doing cross country? did that stop?

How is the ward doing back home? How many new people are there, roughly?

Do you have that talk that you wanted to send me? :)

Life is going pretty swell here. I don't really know how to describe how it is to be in one place for so long on the mission, haha! It's so different than from back home, especially since you're always with your comp! It's cool to see the progress of people in the ward like recent converts, investigators, etc. You know what's funny? I have been to every Porto Stake conference since I came to the mission, because I was in the Porto 2 ward when I started with Elder LeBaron (who finally got engaged, did I tell you that? And Elder Crist, my comp from Coimbra, is already married!), then I went to Coimbra but came back to the Porto area in time for the 2nd stake conference, then the third one happened close to General conference in october, and if I stay in the Porto zone until May, I will have been to four! All four stake conferences! Haha that made me laugh when I thought about it. I would have like to have gone to an area far away, in a little branch, away from any big stuff, but it looks like that's not God's will for me, and I'm okay with it.

I kind of made stew and biscuits! Haha the biscuits didn't turn out great because I forgot that the flour didn't have yeast (here, they have pre-yeasted flour. I have never seen just plain yeast to buy.) The meat was a little red too... but none of us are sick so it's okay haha! How long should the meat take? Because we were cooking it for FOREVER and it barely changed!

That picture with the cake boss is awesome! Celebrity! Also Anna told me she had a couple of accidents in the play and that she was super embarrassed, haha it probably wasn't even that bad. :) Do you know what Cameron Tebbs is doing? Is he on a mission?

Today we visited some catacombs! Scary! And really eerie! Just a bunch of dungeon-looking walls that were lined with set-in coffins, and then in one room there was a little glass window that looked into a pit with a ton of REAL bones, where they would put people like peasants who didn't have money for a coffin. Crazy!

Also, I read this cool little story this week and I wanted to share it with you: "There were four people name Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody, There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could have done it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done." Interesting, right?

Okey dokey love you mom! :)

Dear Elder ValentineSon,

Time is flying so fast right now! I can't believe it's March. You have 120 days left!

We have seen Anna's play four times so far. It is so good! Grandpa Folkman said it's one of the best high school plays he's ever seen and that's a big compliment coming from him! He said the only one that he's seen that is close was when Box Elder did Les Miserables a couple years ago. So it's pretty impressive! You get to see it on a DVD when you get home. 😊

Dad and I have been ushering most nights. It's fun and we get to see the show for free. The only night we can't see the show is tomorrow night, Tuesday, because Ethan has a choir concert. Did you know he's in choir at the Jr High?

I made a wedding cake for my friend Sheresa Tebbs- her daughter Ashley got married. Ashley went on a mission to Guatemala and has been back for about 6 months and now got married in the temple.😊

Sunday the primary presidency got released so I'm not the 1st counselor anymore. I get to go to Relief Society again. I missed it. The new presidency will be really good.

I'm sure Dad has told/will tell you about death in the ward... the man I made the Lord of the Rings cake for passed away. It's seriously so sad. The funeral is on Wednesday so Dad has been trying to write a talk for it.  Pray for him!

That's about it for as far as what's going on with us this week!

I heard a talk this week that I want to send you. I'll hopefully do it in the morning! Sorry this is so short!! I will watch for your email in the morning so I can write some more. Love you tons!!

Some Blessings (March 7)

Dear Everyone,

I just wanted to say that I know God hears and answers our prayers, whether we recognize the answers or not! We were blessed this week by seeing answers to many of our prayers, and it made me realize that all of the other times that I ask God for help and feel like He didn't necessarily answer it how I wanted it, it's because it's true - He doesn't always answer how I want, but He always answers!

We almost lost Bruno and Liliana because of the Law of Tithing - it was really hard for them to hear and they started to let their natural man take over their testimonies and diligence they had already shown. But after a lesson about faith, taught with our Mission President, they are ready to continue, maybe without knowing how everything will turn out, but that's what faith is all about! And that's how prayers should work too - we should act, without knowing the outcome, having faith that God will do His part. I'm so grateful to be a missionary!

Also, this week was transfers - I'm staying! Again! Transfer #6 in the office! We have a new Elder here in the office who is still not an executive, so we'll see where I end up at the end of this transfer, haha! We are now working as a four-way-companionship, so that, when there is little work for some of us in the office, we can leave and get more work in. I'm pretty excited about it!

The gospel is so true! I know it!

Elder V and Dad - February 28 "Greetings from Vermont"

Hey Dad!

What are you doing in Vermont? Did you tell me that already? Haha sometimes since I only get to really think about stuff on p-day, I forget what you've already told me. Sorry!

As I already said, I think it's so awesome that Ethan got to participate more than he was originally doing. I know he was a little bummed and he sounded so excited!

I read your conversation with Elder Tate. I love the leaders of the church! The greatest leaders are truly the most humble and loving, and that's how it seemed with Elder Tate.Haha sometimes I have to call the Missionary Department in Salt Lake for different mission things, and I LOVE talking to the receptionists, because they are so friendly! It's so funny how different a person can be when they are focusing their lives on Christ. It is a true blessing and it makes me want to be that type of person always!

Also, if he already sent you the talk he wrote about (the one he gave to his missionaries), you should send it to me!

About faith, and acting: it is so evident how this principle works with investigators and missionary work in general. It makes so much more sense for God to show His hand AFTER a trial or a step of faith, because if He did it before, we wouldn't learn anything, and learning is one of the reasons we are here on Earth! So if God just took care of all of our decisions and problems, we would never gain the experience that we need to be perfected. I love it when the gospel makes sense like that!

About the quote: I see that so much, even for myself with people that I talk to. I will bear my testimony, but it will have no effect on someone who just won't listen! The Spirit can teach pure truth through me, but people just don't accept it. It's like when Christ would go to Nazareth and the people threw him out and tried to kill Him; I mean, no one can have more effect on people than Christ, but even when He would teach pure doctrine, people turned it away. Like He explains, that's why He taught in parables, so that people wouldn't be held accountable for the things they would not understand. I want to work to have the Spirit testify to me of the truths we learn from modern day Prophets and Apostles, and to be enlightened throughout my life! Haha I always have these big goals but they are really things that I think about.

Okay well! I'm still here haha! It's been a while. The mission's funny that way. 9 months isn't a long time normally but on the mission it's like eternity in one area, but looking back it's flown by! Like, tomorrow is March! That's crazy! Anyway, I love you dad! Peace out!

Love, Elder Valentine!
