Christmas!

Here's Another of Elder Valentine's Gift to Us:

Dearest darlingest mommsie and popsicle; my dear family,

there's been some confusion with the people here in Portugal. But of course, I'll care for Elder Crist; but of course, I'll rise above it!! For I know that's how you'd want me to respond - yes.

Just kidding. That was totes Wicked and it worked out pretty well! Man Christmas was so stinking good! I'm so glad that I got to talk to you guys! Stop making me cry! It's rude! I just love you guys so much and I'm so glad that I got to talk to you all!

Dear grandparents, cousins, and aunts and uncles - I will write you guys letters besides this email. But real quick - I love you all! I am so grateful for my family! Thank you guys for the ornaments on the christmas tree, I loved it!

Dad - That article you sent is super cool and super true! It made me think of how I can testify of the Savior and His Atonement more when I talk to people. I've been trying really hard to make my contacts very meaningful and full of the spirit, and I really think that this will help. Thank you! Man! I didn't realize that Sherlock was coming out! *sniff* Have way much fun watching it! And Tell Bonnie Allison that we are totally going to eat a big fat McDonald´s hamburger! That's super sweet of her, and just make sure that she know's I am super grateful! And hey! If you missed anything in your Star Wars summary, let me know! Now that I know about Han Solo my life is in ruins, so I might as well know the rest. Love ya Dad!

Mom - Hi Mom! the pictures of the talks that you studied are awesome! and your handout, too! If there is any way that you can explain some of your understanding of faith or how you got it, I would love to know, because you said "As I was studying I had a cool experience that all of a sudden I understood how faith works like never before" and I would love to hear about what happened! Dad said your lesson was super good and powerful. Thank you for telling me about it! I will go check out the new topic thing on lds.org. Love ya!

Kimber and Kevin - Kevin, thanks again for your letter. It was super powerful and I loved hearing about Christmas with the family, and I will let you know if I need anything. I kind of failed with your suggestion this week obviously, I forgot the specifics until just now. I will keep trying! Kimber, your hair is way good. And dang! Lincoln seriously amazed me! He could only say "s" for my name when I left and now he's, like, talking! And porter is a chunk! Haha! It's seriously crazy to see the changes! Good luck with your house situation! I love you guys!

Amanda - Thank you so much for writing me every week! I seriously love to hear your testimony and testimony-building experiences. They are so powerful and I'm just so happy for you right now! The food is called "recheio" and it's basically a churro filled with deliciousness. Mine was strawberry. I love you so much!

Anna and Ethan - stay cool. You guys are getting old already and I loved talking to you guys on Christmas! You guys rock! I love you!

Okay fam! I love you guys a super ton! If I missed anything, just tell me that I missed something, because I want to answer every question you give - sometimes I miss a couple and I feel bad, so let me know! I love you!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Week Who Cares Anymore -- Christmas!

Loved that email title from Elder Valentine. Here's his group Christmas email:

Hello my people!

How was your Christmas? Was it just fantastic? It better have been! How blessed are we to have the gospel, especially around Christmas? What a great time to think about the Savior! I don't remember at all what I wrote last week, so I hope I don't repeat myself.

Christmas was bomb! We went caroling to lots of people and ate SO MUCH FOOD and I'm going to get fat. :( but! While caroling we were invited into a nice home of 7 old people and we talked about life, and it made me realize just how nice it is to have knowledge about the plan of salvation, because it gives us purpose here. Coincidentally, my family sent me a Portuguese plan of salvation puzzle, so I have been thinking about it a lot lately! I love how much sense it makes. I love that the Savior loves us! He makes our purpose here on earth have a happy ending with our Heavenly Father and our families. And Christmas is just so perfect to remember it all! So I hope you all thought about the Savior this Christmas!

We are currently in a rut as missionaries with people dropping us for lessons. That would be an avid explanation of my week, besides caroling for Christmas. But all is well! I met an English man and tried to talk to him in English, but alas! I have forgotten how to English to people! I kept switching to Portuguese and I'm sure he was very confused. But I'm sure the spirit talked to him, since I couldn't. It was really funny and super embarrassing, but that's mission life, right?

With the new year coming up, I would like to suggest a goal for you all to think about and write down - How will I come closer to Christ this year? Think of some specific things you can improve on, like being more charitable or reading your Book of Mormon everyday or anything specific, and then pray for the Lord's strength to accomplish that goal. Because I know that through prayer, God can make us the us we never thought possible. I love my Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ, and I know they answer my prayers, and will answer yours as well. Happy New Year to you all!

Abraço,

Elder Valentine!

The Best Christmas Gift Ever - Speaking to Elder Valentine!

On Christmas Day we received the best possible gift -- the opportunity to speak to Elder Valentine! We spent nearly two hours with him over Skype! It was such an incredible, emotional, spiritual experience.

I really don’t know how to summarize such an amazing experience in this journal entry. I can’t really just recount everything we said. Lots of it is already in his letters and posted up on his blog. Maybe the most important things are these: he is still the same old Spencer; he is nothing like the Spencer who left on his mission. He has the same great, fun, funny, sarcastic, silly personality that he has always had. He is just so much fun to talk to! He brightens up the whole room when he talks—even if it’s over the Internet! We talked about Star Wars and he freaked out when I told him that Han Solo got killed. He FREAKED! It was really funny. He told us about his food adventures and about the places he’s seen, about the country side and the people, the roads and the town. We told him about the things we’ve been doing the past few weeks. Then he started talking about spiritual things, and then he becomes nothing like he was when he left. He was always a spiritual giant, but he has grown so much stronger!! His testimony is truly profound. He cried all the way through his testimony, and so did we! It was just so great to see him and talk to him! All of the kids got their own chance to talk to him in a semi 1-1 setting. I just can’t express it. I’m a writer, and I can’t express it! So profoundly moving and wonderful. It truly was the best possible experience we could have on Christmas. The next time we can talk to him is on Mother’s Day in May, and I’m already looking forward to it! He’s doing great. He’s really doing great. That’s all I can ask for. I’m so proud of him!

Merry Christmas to the Family!

The family email this week was incredibly short! I'd be a bit irritated at Elder Valentine . . .  except this Friday we get to talk to him!! So it's all good . . . even this short email!

Heyya there family!

Okey dokey so I don't really know how much longer I have - it might be pretty short. but! I will talk to you guys in like 4 DAYS I'M SO EXCITED I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH! I won't cry. Probably.

Yeah definitely short. Love you guys! Até Natal!!!!!

Love Elder Valentine!

Week 22 - doze dias de natal

I have no idea what that means in the title of the email . . . but here's his email!

Dear Everyone,
Hey there! This was a pretty sweet week! One thing that I have learned about Portugal is that everyone is really nice, just like everyone said they would be... until you start talking about the gospel! I was told by a friend and my trainer a couple months ago that Portugal has been hit pretty hard with religion multiple times through it's history, so no one wants anything to do with anything they aren't familiar with. We taught this big family of 11 PEOPLE who would have been elect investigators, but the dad was worried that by changing or doing anything different, his family would get torn apart. There is a scripture in Matthew 10 that talks about brothers fighting their brothers and children against their parents - the context is Christ sending His Apostles out to do missionary work. Christ explained that the gospel would cause contention because people wouldn't accept it. It makes me sad that that could happen! The family was so happy but just needed a little something like the true gospel to be together forever, and the dad didn't want it.

But! We had a Christmas party for a few of the wards here in Coimbra which was way good! The Bishops of the wards put together a montage of the First Presidency´s Christmas Devotional so I finally got to see a little of that, though it was in Portuguese so I didn't get to hear President Uchtdorf's sweet voice so that was sad. But 10 of us missionaries did a 12 days of Christmas song about things we get as Missionaries, and it was so fun! It was in portuguese, of course, but here is our 12 days of Christmas song translated:

on the (twelfth) day of Christmas, I recieved... (the rhythm works in portuguese I promise)
12 kilograms (or pounds; because of all of the food!)
11 new socks (poor missing sock)
10 Books of Mormon (Book of Mormons? Ah, COPIES of the Book of Mormon!)
9 ugly ties (thanks mom. (just kidding I love all of my ties that's just what we said!!))
8 hours of sleep (because we need it. For real.)
7 grand lunches (lunch is the big meal here. Holy amounts of food.)
6 sweaters (ugly Christmas sweaters of course!)
5 references! (Because we need em!)
4 girlfriends (haha our Zone Leader Elder Roberts had letters from four different girls to show off!)
3 tangerines (oranges and tangerines and every thing alike are very big here. I promise it makes sense. I also juggled the tangerines and it was pretty fun. :)
2 new shoes (because the Portugal cobblestone eats up the soles!)
1 customs tax! (if you aren't careful, you can be charged over 200 dollars just to pick up a package, which totally happened to one of our sisters!)

So that was our song! It took a lot of work but was super fun! The members and non members all laughed and had a good time and we had a Pai Natal (santa claus, or Father Christmas more correctly translated) who had actual presents for all of the kids! Like toys and stuff! Members are so nice!

So for this week, to get you all in a Christmassy mood, I want to tell you all that I have a rock solid testimony and knowledge that our Savior was born. He isn't a fairy tale. Atheists make me kind of mad sometimes, but I won't get into that. I know that our Savior lives! He was born and died here on Earth to be our Redeemer, our Christ. I love my savior and I am so grateful for His sacrifice for me, and for all of us, and for the example He set here on Earth for us to follow. I love His example of service and kindness. It is something I try to follow because as my Savior, all He asks is that we follow Him, and not only will we be happy, but through Him, I can help others be happy too! I love my Savior!

Also. For all of you who all saw the star wars movie. I hope you enjoyed it. I was proselyting.

That is all! Merry Christmas, everyone! Tell me what you got for Christmas! I hope I get new investigators! Until next week!

Ho ho ho,
Elder Valentine!

Week #21 (ish) to Family

Hey family!

Haha yeah so last week Elder Crist definitely spent the whole day buying a suit. Not my favorite way to spend P day for sure.

But It's all good!

Dad - I want you to use your author skills and tell me EVERYTHING. Make it super super good. I need it. Holy stinking cow! You stud! You have like the craziest job ever! I pray for you every night, so I really hope you are feeling lots of missionary blessings! It doesn't snow anywhere besides the mountains here, in which place I am not, so just a LOT of rain! Lots and lots! And then some more! It is very wet right now. But I have a nice jacket. and an umbrella. that's all you need! And the University of Coimbra - yeah! I totally am like really close to it! Everyone who goes there is dressed like the people in Harry Potter - big cloaks and funny lookin. We see them walking around pretty often!  I heard that is where J K Rowling got her inspiration for Harry Potter! She wrote her ideas on a napkin, which totally makes sense because portuguese napkins are basically wax paper and do nothing for your hands, but are good for writing!

Mom - dang your decorations are the bomb! Everything looks super big and happy and Christmassy - we have a plastic wall picture of a christmas tree. I like it! Hey! Congrats on the new phone! Haha that's awesome! For emails, we pay £3 at a little internet place on a big road of shops with harry potter clothes. I know that sounds funny but it's real. Elder Crist has a recorder (the kind you get for elementary kids) and he plays "If you could Hie to Kolob" a lot. He likes to read and he's really good at portuguese! Our area is HUGE but we only work in a tiny little corner of it because we don't have a car. We don't have a lot of people we are working with but we are trying to find news! I love ya mom!

Amanda - Hey! that's super cool about your suit! That sounds super sweet!

Kimber - hey that is so cool! I'm so glad that you guys got your prayer answered! I prayed a lot for you guys too and that's just so so good! Sorry about the hair - I don't think prayers will help with that but I'll do what I can. :)

Anna - Haha glad to know that girls are still talking about me even when I'm in a different country for 5 months! You're welcome for the advice - prayer and lots of study and then more prayer. God really likes it when we pray! I totally know that now. I've needed a lot of His help and I have found that prayer is the best way! On P days, we can do whatever we want - a few p days ago we went and visited a gorgeous river and most p days I go stand in a store while the other elders try on clothes. What the heck. I thought I was serving with men. Bonus sightseeing opportunity - on Saturday me and my comp went to a place called Lousã where it is super green and hilly, and I totes saw a goat! I'm sorry about the clique-y people - I always pray for ya, so just have faith that it will all turn out! The Lord loves you!

Ethan - we named the goat Gerold. He is bearded. I will send a picture next week hopefully.

Sorry for some of the short ones but I gotta go! Don't read the letter I sent until christmas before we talk! Oh about that! Um, I don't know how it is gonna work out yet, but next week for sure I will know. Just tell me what account or whatever for face time and I'll get it worked out. We have a super cool sister who will help us out so I'll be able to do it for sure! Love ya family!

Love, Elder Valentine!

"Placing the Cornerstone"

We are a little off our week counts. Spencer is calling this week #21, but I think that was last week. No matter. Next post will be week #22 just to stay consistent with Elder Valentine. Here's his group email:

Hey everyone!

Sorry for last week - I would love to tell you some crazy intense story as to why I didn't get to write to you all, but in reality, my companion Elder Crist was trying on European suits for the entire day, so we lost time for email. I was pretty mad.

But It's all good! Because on the 5th of December, we had the groundbreaking for the Lisbon, Portugal Temple! The members here have had to take a very long trip to the Madrid, Spain temple for their whole lives to be sealed and do temple work, and finally we are going to receive a temple here! It won't be completed for a couple of years, but the people here are so excited!

If any of you have ever had fried bananas, I found them. :)

So our investigator Danilson was supposed to be baptized last saturday, but the week before we ran into him on the street walking to his car to go to Lisbon for a month! We were so confused! He said he was going there to find a job and wouldn't be baptized. We were so sad. And then three days later we found him again, still here in Coimbra, and we were like "dude! What?" apparently he decided not to go. So we are (hopefully) going to baptize him this saturday!

I have a challenge for you all. Read these two scripture passages:
2 Nephi 33:10-15
10 And now, my beloved brethren, and also Jew, and all ye ends of the earth, hearken unto these words and believe in Christ; and if ye believe not in these words believe in Christ. And if ye shall believe in Christ ye will believe in these words, for they are the words of Christ, and he hath given them unto me; and they teach all men that they should do good.
11 And if they are not the words of Christ, judge ye—for Christ will show unto you, with power and great glory,that they are his words, at the last day; and you and I shall stand face to face before his bar; and ye shall know that I have been commanded of him to write these things,notwithstanding my weakness.
12 And I pray the Father in the name of Christ that many of us, if not all, may be saved in his kingdom at that great and last day.
13 And now, my beloved brethren, all those who are of the house of Israel, and all ye ends of the earth, I speak unto you as the voice of one crying from the dust: Farewell until that great day shall come.
14 And you that will not partake of the goodness of God,and respect the words of the Jews, and also my words, and the words which shall proceed forth out of the mouth of the Lamb of God, behold, I bid you an everlasting farewell,for these words shall condemn you at the last day.
15 For what I seal on earth, shall be brought against you at the judgment bar; for thus hath the Lord commanded me, and I must obey. Amen.
Moroni 10:27-29, 34

27 And I exhort you to remember these things; for the time speedily cometh that ye shall know that I lie not, for ye shall see me at the bar of God; and the Lord God will say unto you: Did I not declare my words unto you, which were written by this man, like as one crying from the dead,yea, even as one speaking out of the dust?
28 I declare these things unto the fulfilling of the prophecies. And behold, they shall proceed forth out of the mouth of the everlasting God; and his word shall hiss forth from generation to generation.
29 And God shall show unto you, that that which I have written is true.
34 And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air, to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead. Amen.
and now think about this - what will you tell Nephi and Moroni at the judgment bar about how you used the Book of Mormon in your life? How did you use the words of God?
Did you reject them?
Did you put them to the side, thinking that you would use them later?
Or did you use them to partake of the goodness of God? Because that is what they are for!
I know that the book of Mormon is true. There are so many people who lose or never gain testimonies because they are unwilling to read it. It makes me sad. Because I can testify that this book will bless your life, and help you find salvation. That's a pretty big promise. But I know it's true! I challenge you to read the word of God - apply it to your life, become better through the Atonement of Christ, and then share that goodness with everyone!

That is all. Until next week!

-Elder Valentine!

Week #21 - The Saddest Week Ever!

Elder Valentine didn't have time to write us this week. We received the saddest word parents could ever receive from their missionary:

Im Really Really sorry, parents, but i dont have time to write any letters this week. Ill tell you about it later. I love you! Tell everyone else it didnt work Out. Love you!

Elder Valentine

Pictures from Coimbra! Week 20 Photos!

Awesome photos from Elder Valentine this week! It's Thanksgiving week in Portugal, and Spencer got into the spirit by cooking!! Miracles really do happen. . . Here's the description he gave (the numbers do not correspond to the photos below, so read the captions!): 1. Elder Crist 2.Elder Judd and Garcia in our house 3. My old companions and I and Elder LeBaron is in the GoreTex jacket 4. my pie! 5. Before the pie - I was totally confused at how to make the cinnamon crumbs on top, it was just a big mush pile in my hands for like 20 minutes.

Week #20ish to the Family

HEYYA FAMILY! Man, you make me so jealous with your american thanksgiving!! Haha but we had a lot of fun here, and seriously, my pies were the bomb.com. Mom, you would be proud!

Daddio - Pop daddy! I just love you a lot! I am working on a novel of a letter for you and mom, but I will work hard to send more to you guys. I just don't know what to send specifically to the family sometimes. Bad excuse, but I'll try really really hard! THank you for always sending your bishop experiences and what you learn from studies! I really love it because I feel like you just know a ton and I love learning from you! Cool story! I drove a car last week! I didn't break any rules! Elder McGhie had to go to the office and I haven't done residency ( how we get to legally live here) yet, so I could still use my american drivers licence, so I drove his car to the office! It was scary for about 30 seconds to drive and the whole time was scary on these tiny portuguese roads, but it was way cool!

Mom - haha oh another story - my black slacks totally got bleached all over the back. We had some bleach for an object lesson and it got all over the back seat of the car and I didn't know so they are have black and half grey! Haha... so I might need to buy some new pants here. Actually. There is this european store Zara - it made me girly for clothes. There are way cheap - like 90£ for a whole good quality suit - and it has some slacks that are way nice for cheap too! Speaking of buying things, I have had to use some personal money for a couple of things, so could you check my account and make sure I haven't used a ton? I am bad at keeping track. Sorry! I didn't tell you guys that I bought stuff so sorry for that too! I bought a little bag which is way sweet and a wookie onsie pajama thing. And I had to use some money for transportation. Sorry! Also, Christmas is big here! People really love it! There are a lot of stores with decorations, but that's about it since everyone lives in apartments. It's definitely not like america though. Haha I feel like in terms of quality, the world goes like this - 3rd world, 2nd, 1st, then America. Haha portugal is a first world country but it really just doesn't compare to our lives in America! we are really so blessed to be there. Or you are. Or I am but not now but still blessed cuz im on a mission. Something like that. I don't really know if santa is a thing yet. And I totally use the Ipod! Yay! We used it a lot more when I was with LeBaron becuase the car had an audio jack, but I still use it at night and stuff. It is super nice to have!

Amanda - What a cool experience! That is like totally how it works! I'll write you more later but thanks so much for telling me about your prayer experience! Ryleigh is adorable!

Kimber and Kevin - love ya. Your kids are way cute and getting so big! I'll write you guys later too. Sorry, I'm just running low on time!

Anna - stop being cute in every picture. It makes me worried that the little 15 year old boys are gonna want to date you before you're 16. Don't let it happen. Tell em how it is. You have a big brother who will kick their butts... in 20 months.

Ethan - holy snap, man! PARA BENS! Congratulations! You finished the Book of Mormon?? Man, not gonna lie, I don't think I did that until I was like 14 or 15, that is so so cool! Seriously! Your testimony is SO powerful. Thank you for writing me your testimony of the Book of Mormon! Future missionary for sure! There are guys out here who didn't even read it until they GOT here. So you rock. But, ah, don't get a big head. I just love you a ton. Haha and seriously - you made me laugh SO hard with the first part of your letter, if you remember it. I'm in a public internet place so people looked at me funny. But para bens. You have the family genes. And the Spencer jeans. Pretty sure you're wearing my pants. para bens.

Okay! Love ya family! Ate logo! Tchau! Ficam Bem!

Love, Elder Valentine!

A Letter to Mommy and Daddy - But We'll Share It With You!!

Elder Valentine was kind enough to send a letter just to his dear Mom and Dad. But being the kind and charitable people we are, we decided to share it with all of you! Here it is:

Hi parents! I love you so so so so much! I'm actually way sorry that I haven't written you two a letter just for you guys! I never thought about doing that. Thanks mom!

Haha so the jacket - funny story! Elder Johnson was like "hey I have this jacket but I have another one so do you want it?" and I was like "heck yeah I do!" so I got it! And then last week, when transfers happened, this Elder Sutton moved in to our house and, and one of the first things he said was "hey, I like that jacket! It looks a lot like the one I left in the other Porto house." Apparently Elder Johnson took that jacket and gave it to me, and then the elder who it really belonged to found me wearing it! Haha! But he said I could keep it because he left it because he didn't want it. So free jacket! Elder LeBaron wore my GoreTex jacket for a while, actually! I'll send a picture of us, but that jacket is a little big, so I'll wear it when it gets cold and REALLY rainy, which happens in like january!

So. How am I feeling? Honestly, a lot of the time I feel inadequate! I feel like I don't have enough experience or know enough portuguese or know how to contact or help people feel the spirit. But I do know that I am being qualified to serve, not serving because I am qualified. Yeah? Also, I feel like I never am able to do enough. It is hard sometimes to talk to 100 people and not have any of them stop to talk to you. I have been trying to think of ways to find people besides what we normally do, through the spirit, so hopefully we will have some new ideas. One of the problems in this new companionship with Elder Crist is that it doesn't seem like he is in a hurry to do anything. It takes him a long time to get out the door or get out of the church building on Sunday or think about something to plan and I just think "Come on Elder! We have work to do!" I'm not saying he is a bad missionary, but I guess I was pampered having two AP's as my companions. Elder McGhie has been out the same amount of time as Elder Crist and there is a HUGE difference in the two. When the transfer happened, President Amorim actually talked to me for a little bit and told me that he wanted me to push and motivate Elder Crist. And Elder Crist told me "I won't tell you what, but president is really expecting big things from you." And every week when I write president he says something similar. I'm not being prideful - but it seems like I'm being put in these different situations that are just strange. First a training with the AP, and then being told, as the trainee, to get my companion to work hard, it's kind of weird! Sorry, this is all kind of sporadic. Point is - I feel like there is so much more I could do but don't know how to do. I always have this feeling that I am not doing enough. It's hard, some days. Good thing we have the enabling power of the Atonement! Mom, you talked about that a little, and I am just so glad that we have it. Anyways, I am gonna write more to you guys in a christmas letter, but there ya go. Some of the Spencer struggles! But I'll talk to you guys a little later! I love you so much! Bye!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Week #20ish - Surprise Transfer!!

So somehow we lost a week in the counting with Elder Valentine. Guess we'll reset and call this week #20.

We received this very surprising news from Elder Valentine. He's been transferred! Read on!

Ola todas as pessoas!
Como foi a Dia das Graças? Nos aqui em portugal não temos isso feriado! But we still had lots of fun!

So first off, I got surprise transferred (not emergency transferred, I'm not a bad person) to a big city called Coimbra, and my new companion is Elder Crist! (Not Christ, it makes the "i" sound like "brisk") I was supposed to be with Elders McGhie and Johnson, but the president sent me here! So everything is new and different! Story of my mission! I still haven't been in one place for more than a transfer or had the same companion, but tudo bem! It's been an adventure! Elder Crist is kind of goofy... haha he has a recorder (the kind you played in kindergarten music class) that he brings everywhere and plays hymns. Haha oh boy. This transfer is gonna be fun!

So for Thanksgiving (or "aquela dia chama 'a Dia das Graças'"que ninguem sabe sobre America) We did regular missionary stuff until 7, when we had an american party for our ward members. I totally made two apple pies and they were, like, good! I was so surprised! It was the first time that I have ever baked anything ever, so I was pretty stoked. We had american stuffing and mashed potatoes and a chicken that was not so american and it was a lot of fun! On the not so fun side, we ate at this members house who has a cockroach problem... hahaha... there were cockroaches on the walls, on the table, in the food... no big deal. I didn't throw up, so that's a bonus!

We found these two brazilian soccer players Ilo and Rodrigo, who are super cool, and are totally going to be baptized. And we have this funny black guy Denilson who calls himself American because apparently he was born in California and lived there for a long time but can't speak English. Haha but his baptism is marked for the 12th so we are super excited!

Alright, sorry this email is all over the place, but I'm really enjoying it here! For my spiritual thought, I want to give thanks to God for a few things. I am SO thankful to be on my mission. There have been a couple rough days, but 98% of the time I have loved it 100%, and I have been so blessed from this opportunity. I have grown a love for the scriptures that I didn't know I could have! Seriously, if I were to just finish my mission right now, I would go read the scriptures probably all day. An hour of personal time isn't enough! I am so grateful for God's word to His children through these sacred writings! I also am so grateful for my family! I love them so so so so much. My dad sends my pictures every week of nieces and nephews and parties and it makes me home sick but I love it! I could not have asked for a more supportive and loving family. Mostly, I am grateful for the knowledge I have that I am a member of God's church, and I know he loves me. It has been a huge blessing for me to know that! I love this work and I love my Heavenly Father. I couldn't ask to be anywhere or be doing anything better!

Okay! I'll talk to you all next week! Be happy! Read the scriptures! Let Heavenly Father know that you love Him! Peace out!

Week #18 Family Email

Hey family!

Man! New transfer! I'll try and get you guys some pictures real quick - sorry, we had to let some sisters email before us, so I had to write this a little later. Thanksgiving! woah! They don't even celebrate that here! Dang! I'll probably be preaching the gospel while you guys are eating yummy food, so enjoy it for me!

Dad - Thank you. I'm glad to see that you aren't afraid to man up and eat. For me. *tear* Haha I love you!

Mom - wow! Congrats on the calling! I'm so excited for you! I totally agree - new callings in the church are huge chances to grow! If you think about it, missionaries get new "callings" every six weeks with transfers and new companions and new families and everything - I have totally grown so much out here because of it! So I am super excited for you! I don't know how thanksgiving will work out - I guess I'll tell ya what I did next week! Thanks for all of the scriptures! I love you!

Kimber and Kevin - I'll pray for you guys for sure! Good luck with your baby and house decisions and everything! Thanks for writing me!

Anna - I already wrote you, but I love you! Remember what I said!

Ethan - sup! Bro! Love ya! You look like a stud in cross country! We run every day for excercises, so I'm doing the same thing!

Okay family! I love you guys! Have a SUPER GOOD THANKSGIVING! Love you love you! I am SO grateful for an amazing family! Bye! Have fun! Eat lots! Tchau! Ate logo! Fica bem! Boa semana! Amo-vocês!

Week #18 - Baptism!

Exciting news from Elder Valentine this week! Read on!

Dear Everyone,

We had a baptism this week! Woo hoo!!! Rodolfo (or Celso Rodolfo Loureiro Castro Sousa, as I had to memorize for the confirmation) was baptized on saturday! He is the brother of Mª DoCeu, and is super firm in his testimony and we are just so excited for him! I confirmed him in church yesterday, and I was worried that my Portuguese would be bad during the blessing, but the Lord blesses us SO much, and it went fine. I love seeing people progress in their knowledge in the gospel, from taking the first lesson to being baptized, and seeing their spiritual growth! I wish that everyone here in Portugal could see the changes that come to people who live the gospel. They just become so happy and loving and it's so great!

Today is transfers, and we just sent my companion, Elder LeBaron, home. It was super sad. You gain really great friends on the mission and it is super hard to say goodbye, even though you only know them for a small amount of time. But the work must go on! Elder Johnson and I are still companions and we are with the other AP now, Elder McGhie. I don't know why I am so blessed to be with awesome missionaries right now, but it's so great! He works super hard and I'm super excited to serve with him.

I have been reading Jesus the Christ lately, which is an amazing book if you haven't read it. I have really come to know my Savior through my studies of His life! One of my favorite teachings of Christ is in Matthew 7, when he talks about the good tree bringing forth good fruit and bad trees bringing forth bad fruit, and Christ states in verse 20, "wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." I have seen this story working in my mission. So many people have a religion but are confused about doctrine or don't live what they believe, or believe something that doesn't bring forth good fruits. But the Gospel of Jesus Christ is only good fruits! You can test them by studying the Book of Mormon and praying. But these are ACTIONS. Too many people are unwilling to test the fruits and receive the blessings because they are just lazy or say "oh, I don't have time for that." Of course you do! Man, I hear that answer so much and I really don't like it. Christ should be your number one! Your life will be blessed beyond your comprehension as you follow the example of you Savior. So ACT! Do something! Christ and your Heavenly Father will bless you as you do.

Have a good week. :) I love my mission! I am so grateful for my opportunity to act 24/7 and serve my Heavenly Father. Until next week!

Portugal Week #5 - Two Short Family Messages

Elder Valentine must be working hard, because his messages are getting shorter! He sent two short family messages this week:

Email #1:
Hey family! So I'm writing this a little early today, you'll all be asleep unfortunately. It's like, 3 in the morning or something for you guys!

Real quick, thanks farnsworths and grandpa and grandma folkman for writing me! I love to hear how everything is going for you guys! Grandma, I hope your hand gets better quick! I'll say lots of prayers for you!

Mom, I think that one of the best presents that the elders here talk about is just a bunch of pictures from home! Like in a photo book or something. And I totally agree! I don't have a lot of other ideas besides that, but pictures are super nice. Always! I LOVE pictures, probably as much as you guys love mine.

Okay so This was way short, but I'll be writing again around 5 today (or like 10 in the morning for you guys) so if you want to write me anything before I come back, I'd love it! I didn't hear much from the family this week, I hope everything is going well! I'll talk to you later!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Email #2:
Hi family! Dang! I don't have as much time as I thought, but I can answer a couple of questions!

Mom - we have Rodolfo marked for the 22nd, and hopefully Anibal and Conceição, but they still need to get married, so we'll see how that goes!

Dad - The shirt rules are actually pretty chill. The whole words thing isn't a big deal, and people have pretty casual stuff to wear around!

Kevin - haha I actually don't have a tablet... but tudo bem! I had one in California but here we are sharing two computers between the three of us at a little church building today! Thanks for all of your advice with the book of mormon and pictures and everything! I will totally implement them into my missionary work!

Kimber - I'll pray for ya! Man! your kids are so big! (oh, kevin's kids too) The weather is pretty irregular, it gets hot one day and cold another. Like Utah!

Amanda - I'm so excited for 20 months from now to really see your baby! My portuguese is seriously getting better every day. I have a ways to go, but I feel like I'm progressing fast! I have eaten "bacalhau" which is cod fish - that's like the Portuguese staple. There are 10,000 ways to make it and it all tastes like cod fish. Mmmm..... I'm so excited to talk to you guys too! I can't wait to see everyone!

Okay! Haha thanks for writing me, I didn't mean to sound like impatient or something, I just love you guys a lot and love hearing from you! I'll talk to you all next week! Bye!

Love, Elder Valentine!

Week #5 Group Message

Hey everyone!

Wow! I gave my first blessing in portuguese yesterday, and it was way awesome! I gave it to this little boy Gonçalo. His mom and dad split up a while ago, and now they have to have a court meeting to see where he will go, because apparently his mom doesn't have legal custody of him or something. It's all very complicated, but I gave a blessing to him for comfort and it was super cool! I definitely have a testimony of the Gift of Tongues, and that the spirit will guide our words when we are doing his work.

Mª DoCeu and her brother Rodolfo (it sounds like "Holdoulfoo," and I found out his name is Rudolph in english; haha!) are SO ELECT! We had a lesson on tithing this week and Maria said "Oh, I was wondering how I could give something back! Can I pay right now?" man. So good. Rodolfo is being baptized this week, but Maria has to wait because her boyfriend is from Brazil and they can't get married until they go to Brazil for the papers... so january. But they are so good!

Portugal is just so funny. I would say that about 80% of the people are above the age of 60, and 100% of those people have bad knees, a total of 3 teeth in their mouth from smoking, and a mental illness. It's actually kind of sad sometimes to talk to people who are just out of it, but most of the time it's hilarious. The portuguese culture is very to the point; if you say "hello!" they say "speak." so you start talking about Jesus Christ and they say "Ah, leave me be, leave me be!" and run off at a grand speed of 2 miles an hour on their bad knees. Super funny.

We came in contact with 2 or 3 jehovas witnesses and a couple baptist or christian people, and they all love to argue about the bible and how the bible is all we need and will never need anything else and wo unto you because you have more scripture. But let me tell you, I am SO grateful for the Book of Mormon. It solidifies and clarifies the teachings of the Bible, and adds to the testimony that Jesus is the Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Through this book, I know that this church is true, that Joseph Smith was a prophet and we receive guidance from a loving Heavenly Father TODAY for our eternal happiness. If you haven't read your Book of Mormon for a while, READ IT! God will bless you so much when you do. You can gain a stronger testimony of everything our church believes just through this book. I love the Book of Mormon and am so glad to know that Heavenly Father guides us right now!

Okay, that's all for this week, I'll talk to you later!

Last Set of Pictures from Porto from Week 4

Here's the last set of pictures from Elder Valentine from Week #4. The picture of Spencer by himself is particularly cool, because he took it at the mission home right before emailing us! So it felt like we were right there with him. Very cool!

Here's Elder Valentine's always interesting commentary:

1. My room with Elders Poteet and Wait - the typical messy missionary room 2. our kitchen - we are the only house in the mission with a dryer! How blessed are we! 3. THEY HAVE MILKA HAHA IN YOUR FACE FAMILY! I can just go to the store and buy a milka bar for £1.50 which I totally did today and ate it all. Be jealous! Also I am sorry. That was harsh language, I'm sure it makes you cry because you can't have this delicious german chocolate goodness. BUT IN YOUR FACE! 4. Where I am right now, in the mission office, with some elders. These two are Elder Merkle and Elder Hicks. Elder Lebaron is sitting down. 5. A really bad picture of me right now!

More Pictures from Porto!

I've included Spencer's very interesting commentary about the pictures. Enjoy!

1. I think this one might be the government building here, but I'm not sure, 2. my district, Elder Mghie, Johnson, Krull, LeBaron, Me, Poteet, Wait, Sister Waddell, Sister Jones 3. a "maria bolacha" which is this cookie that you can buy a package of like 150 cookies for a euro. Not even kidding. They will be my downfall. 4. a francesinha, which is a sandwhich with 4 kinds of meat, cheese, an egg, this crazy sauce, and batatas fritas (french fries) 5. a lesson with an RM Isabell (on the left) and her mom (in the middle) and Isabells sister (taking the picture) and us missionaries (the ones with the name tags except you can't see mine, but that's okay because you know which one is me, unless you have forgotten what I look like, in which case I will be sad) 6. A picture at a baptism of me and my companions, Elder LeBaron and Elder Johnson, and Elder Hicks is on the right... I don't actually know why he is in the picture but tudo bem.
